Southport Family History Group

Part of the Liverpool & SW Lancs Family History Society

History & Aims

Southport Family History Group was formed in 1982 by Michael Walcott and Dr John Turner and has met on the second Friday in every month at Birkdale Library ever since. The aim of the group is to help members research their genealogical antecedents and family history in general. The Society is dedicated to promoting interest in Genealogy, Family and Local History amongst people of all age groups by inviting speakers to our monthly meetings who cover a wide and varying range of subjects as well as conducting quarterly members evenings where the emphasis is on review of the groups projects and members interests.

Projects

We have carried out several research projects in the past including an index of memorial inscriptions of St Cuthbert's Church, Halsall, and we are currently involved in compiling an index of births, marriages and deaths from the Southport Visiter newspaper from its commencement in 1844, a history of the Southport Flower Show, an extended family tree of the Rimmers (a popular local name) of North Meols, Circus biographies especially of Henglers Circus and several other personal indexes.

Activities

Periodically we pay visits to local record offices and libraries where an enormous volume of records lie undisturbed promising revelation and assimilation of a wonderful catalogue of facts and features. Our members make occasional visits to the Public Records Office at Kew and are very happy to help beginners in their research. We also maintain a Group and Society library where members have access for their research purposes.
A programme of invited speakers for the remainder of this year is shown below. However, it may be worth checking in advance with Peter Lucas to see if there have been any late alterations should a particular speaker be of interest to you. A highlight addition to our quarterly members evenings recently have been 'mini-talks' by individual members who have brought a variety of subjects before our membership and stimulated much discussion and interest.
