I hadn't realised it was a topical issue. Thanks for the links. My ancestor Mary Hazelhurst was described as a midwife in the 1861 census.

occupation midwifery

I have an ancestor whose given profession in the 1880s was midwifery. She lived in Warrington. I always thought that midwifery was undertaken by untrained local women.Am I right, or could she have worked for a hospital and undergone any training? Was there a St Catherine's Hospital in Warrington? :P

My mother's family lived around Watkin St, West St,Orford St, Winwick Rd. These have all gone due to 20century redevelopment. Are there old maps and photo archives I could tap into to help form a picture of what it was like for them? Also they worked at Atherton Quay and in the factory yard as cotto...

I suppose that could have been the case- the names were written by the vicar, since they could only add a cross for their name. Incidentally I am a new member and this is my first posting. Should I have posted my question on another forum?

Does anyone know of a Thomas Gathley? He was a salt boiler from Great Budworth. His daughter Ann married Thomas and became Ann Rutter- an ancestor of mine. I have a copy of her wedding certificate Sept 1839 ST Paul's, Warrington it definitely says Anne Gathley and Thomas Gathley.. I can only find Ga...
