Re: The Elms, Peel Street
Thank you all for your wonderful help. Thank you Retiring Type for confirming his listing in the directory. That is very helpful. Thank you also Blue for the map of Hawkstone Street. That has really helped me make sense oh where the house would have been on today's map. The layout of the streets see...

Re: Marriage at 15/16
Many thanks for your reply.
Would it have been legal to marry at 20 without a parent's permission? I believed that 21 was regarded as "full" in terms of marrying without parental consent?
Would people have to give any proof as to age?
Many thanks.

Re: The Elms, Peel Street
Many thanks for those postings - they were very interesting and much appreciated. My GGG Grandfther was a gardener. I am a little surprised that he lived there as many of the other residents seem to be clerks or artisan type professions. In 1851 he was at 31 Wood Street. In 1861 he was at The Elms a...

Marriage at 15/16
My Gg Grandmother, Elizabrth Budworth Bore, was married in April 1867 when she would have been either 15 or just turned 16. However her marriage cert states that she is 20. Has anybody come across anything similar? Presumably her parents were agreeable to the marriage as they would have given permis...

The Elms, Peel Street
My GG Grandmother, Elizabeth Budworth Bore, lived at The Elms,Peel Street at the time of her marriage in 1867. Looking at census records it appears her family lived here for some time. I have seen photos on the Old Photographs site and they appear to have been large houses. I do not believe Elizabet...

Newspapers at Liverpool Records Office
Hello I travelled to Liverpool today to visit the Family History Records. I didn't make a lot of progress other than realising how ageing has made reading the microfiches so difficult! One if the things I was looking for were details of two trials. There is a court record of a acquittal for assault ...

Re: Mary Graley (nee McGreavey) - died in the workhouse
Many thanks for all the replies. I went to Liverpool Records Office today but, as suspected, there are no records for Walton Workhouse from 1909 so I couldn't find a record for Mary's death. I did look at the Chaplains book but she wasn't mentioned. Could I just check one thing. As Marys death is re...

Re: Mary Graley (nee McGreavey) - died in the workhouse
Many thanks for the links - very helpful.
For Mary's place of death it simply says "workhouse" but doesn't say which one. Was Walton Workhouse the only one in the Walton registration district?
Many thanks.

I could not see anything on Ancestry or Lancashire BMD.
Do you have an address for where they died and do you know their religion?

Re: Please could you help me interpret military records?
Many thanks for that - the disability must have been a result of being gassed. He died 10 years later from pneumonia, it is possible that his lungs were still weakened as a result of the gas.
I had not gone backwards on Ancestry - so I had not seen that. Many thanks for your help.

I wondered whether anybody who is familiar with WW1 records could help me interpret my G grandfather's records? I would be very grateful.

Re: Are the Merchant Navy records complete?
Many thanks for your help. That is reallu useful advice. I will look into this more. It has made me realise that I have researched my distant ancestors but actually know little about one of my grandparents.
Many thanks for your help.

Could the name on the certificate be a mistake? I have a marriage cert for an ancestor from the same period in which I know one of the Christain names is wrong. If people were illiterate they may not have spotted it.

Re: Do you think my theory could be plausible?
Many apologies for not responding - i had not spotted the replies. I had always wondered about the Maria with "Deam". I could not find a birth for an Alfred so could not link it. Thank you Dickiesam for finding the Alfred Otte birth - that does seem to confirm that these are not my ancestors. That i...

Re: Do you think my theory could be plausible?
Many thanks for your reply. I think this is the right Thomas Graley ashe is living withhis brother. When he died in July 1901 his address is still 13 Fletcher Street but his occupation is given as dock labourer. So it may be the census entry of marine broker is a mistake. (?) under informant it says...

Re: Do you think my theory could be plausible?
Many thanks. That is their marriage. I wondered whether, as Thomas is missing from the 1871, 1881 and 1891 census he may have been homeless/looking for work and out of touch with his family as he is recorded as deceased on his son's marriage cert. having said that, Thomas and Mary had children toget...
