Re: Amelia Hughes help needed

Hi everyone, finally back on the forum and continuing researching Amelia. Not much really new except that her death certificate does not mention her parents names. Have sent an email to Greg Jefferys who is also interested in her so hopefully we'll be able to uncover further info. The Tasmanian BDM ...

Re: Amelia Hughes help needed

This is the information I got from Marg Watson reg. Alice Jones. Hopefully it might at some point help in tracing Amelia: Andrew Jones married in 1822 to Mary Ann Mellor at St Mary’s Shrewsbury, Shropshire. There children were: Charlotte christened 1/1/1826 Sarah christened 21/2/1827 Elizabeth chris...

Re: Amelia Hughes help needed

Hi Blue, thanks for the help. I am wondering whether we have the right Alice Jones. Do we know when she married Frederik Stevenson? was it while in prison or after she was released? Are there other Alice Jones who were transported to Tasmania?

Re: Amelia Hughes help needed

Colette and Louis, you are saying that the Alice Jones who was convicted with Amelia Hughes in1843 was born in Wales? Opening up the possibility that Amelia Hughes might have come from there as well? If so then why would Amelia Hughes family not show up in the 1841 census? Louis, how did you get the...

Re: Amelia Hughes help needed

Thanks everyone for the help. One thing I cannot understand is why I am unable to find a death entry for Amelia Glover on the Tasnamian BDM website. It's a fact she is buried in Cornelian Bay cemetery, her burial date is Sept. 16, 1910. So why does she not show up on either the Australian BDM indexe...

Re: Amelia Hughes help needed

Hi Colette, no I have not found a marriage. There does not appear to be a civil registration of the marriage. I believe they got married in 1856 or 1857 in Port Cygnet. I need to find out somehow in which church and then see if the parish records for that church are available. I believe you are righ...

Re: Amelia Hughes help needed

I haven't heard of any colour references in the family research although it could be as you say. A possibility, but does it say he's a bricklayer?

Re: Amelia Hughes help needed

Hi Charlotte and Blue, she's a hard one to crack. I think I may have found her burial place in Hobart Tasmania. The cemetery is currently looking for her burial record a well as William Glover who she married in 1857. I'm hoping for some enlightening information although not holding my breath. She d...

Re: Amelia Hughes help needed

I'm not quite sure where to go from here. If she was indeed born outside Lancashire are there online parish records for counties bordering it? She might have come from a neibouring county.

Colette, when you say John Brown and Amelia are acting like a married couple, what do you mean?

Re: Amelia Hughes help needed

Hi Colette, it's possible but why can't Amelia Brown be a sister to John Brown. If Amelia is using the Brown name then why would she switch back to Hughes in later records. Just thinking out loud.

Thanks Alison, at least we can stroke her name off. At first I thought we might of gotten lucky with her. We'll keep on digging.

Re: Amelia Hughes help needed

Hi Colette, the only names I have for Amelia are her 3 bothers (John, Elisha and Josh) and sister Anne. Also John Brown, a bricklayer, father of her child Charlotte. I don't know why they are mentioned and her parents are not. I think I have to concentrate on other Amelias Hughes (possibly born outs...

Re: Amelia Hughes help needed

Colette, I can't seem to find Josh Hughes in the 1841 census. Can you give all the household info?

Hilary, can you give me all the info on Elisha Hughes in the 1851 census? I can't see him either.

Thanks, Frank

Re: Amelia Hughes help needed

Thanks Blue, I had not found that particular document. I'll find it and examine it.

There seems to be a lot of Hughes in the C of E parish records. Looks like they may be of Welsh backgound then? I assume if they were from Ireland they would be Roman Catholic?

Re: Amelia Hughes help needed

Hi Blue, thanks for your time and assistance.

I've not run accross the Church of England reference that you mention. Where were you able to see that entry? As you say it would mean probably searching C of E parishes for her birth then, and her possibly being Welsh descent.

Re: Amelia Hughes help needed

Thanks Blue, I'll re-examine those records. I really don't know whether an actual marriage record exits. I haven't been able to find it online. Maybe I'll get someone in Tasmania to look for it. Colette, the only place I have found that she was born in Liverpool is on the FOUNDERS SURVIVORS website....
