Thank you for all the help, unfortunately I am no further on. By the time the SS Batiscan was wrecked Henry Pierpoint had married my grandmother Ada Bowman and had his master's ticket. I think this must just be a family tale, possibly started by the man himself to amuse his children!

I am wondering where I can go to find information to substantiate or dismiss a family tale. The story is that my grandfather, Henry Pierpoint b 1894 in Liverpool, 'ran away' to sea and was shipwrecked on his first voyage. He was about 15 or 16 when this happened.
