Re: Is this my Henry Develin/Devlin?!

Hi Glen, There's a fair chance that, as the inebriate Henry Develin was a one time employee of the East India Company, he was actually a soldier rather than a civilian administrator. Either way the best records about the EIC are held in the British Library's Asian, Pacific and African Studies Depart...

Re: Was he Dennison or Johnson ?

Martin, pm me your email address and I'll send the pdfs over to you. You won't find any references to individual soldiers in the war diaries unless it concerns their death or capture. Bertie, yes that clinches the fact that the second battlion and hence JFDJ were in Aldershot at the requisite time. ...

Re: Was he Dennison or Johnson ?

I have a different certified copy of the marriage certificate. It is written in a different hand and it reads quite clearly " Rgt. at Aldershot". Make more sense ? From that I would assume that the 2nd battalion KLR was in Aldershot at that point. I've checked the war diaries for 2/10 but unfortuna...

Re: George Georgeopoulo

A further update based on some certificates which arrived today. Elizabeth's birth cert doesn't tell me anything I didn't already know, other than it was her mother Mary who registered the birth - hardly surprising. Date of birth confirmed as 29 November 1893, not 1894 as shown in 1939Reg. Christy J...

Re: Was he Dennison or Johnson ?

I can't offer anything other than speculation that he might have been on a NCO's cadre at Aldershot, prior to his promotion to Lance Corporal in October. The R9 / 129 issue baffles me. Unfortunately there are no other capital Rs on the page to compare it with, but the vicar forms his capital Bs and ...

Re: Was he Dennison or Johnson ?

Martin, I've been looking at the documents on page 6 again. On the medal roll document Bertie posted (first entry on page) JFDJ is shown as with 2/10 KLR, but that was a document from 1921 so looking retrospectively. Later (second from bottom) his medal card says his date of entry into France was 19...

Martin, No Bertie is right about the military picture. The embossed details are feint but just visible in the bottom right corner.

Re: Was he Dennison or Johnson ?

Photo, Cathedral Studio, Chester. Long shot, visiting mother perhaps, Lily Holdsworth died in Chester, 1921, worth looking in to. Bertie, where did you get that information about the studio? If I hadn't known that I would have suggested this might possibly have been taken in France due to the rathe...

Re: Was he Dennison or Johnson ?

I can only assume it is Ethel. My aunt sent me the pic about 15/20 years ago. On the envelope she wrote "Reg No. 5068 Liverpool Scottish. Later July 1918 No.5 O.C.B. Trinity College Cambridge. Your Grandfather John. Your Grandmother Ethel Red Cross. I imagine these were engagement photos taken abou...

Re: Was he Dennison or Johnson ?

He is in the uniform of 10th (Scottish) Battalion of the King's Regiment (Liverpool) , which is confirmed by the documents posted by Bertie and Martin on page 6 of this thread. As he isn't wearing any rank badges I would guess this was taken between 26/7/1915 and 4/10/16, and not as late as 1917 as ...

Re: Was he Dennison or Johnson ?

Concerning 16 Beechcroft Rd London SW11, I'm wondering if a mistake has been made and it should SW17. On all searches I keep getting directed to Beechcroft Rd SW17 which is Tooting. 16 Beechcroft Rd is the home of Charles Sidney Read and wife Maud Matilda Read and wouldn't you just know it, next do...

Re: George Georgeopoulo

Just to update the thread and prevent any unnecessary work by anyone else, I have discovered that the National Archives have George Georgeopoulo's naturalisation certficate. It is dated 16 May 1922. The link is here: TNA . However as it is a document which has not been digitized I can't access it un...

Re: Can anyone explain this?

Bert, I can't explain it other than to say that when most websites receive an incoming request to access a server the server then looks to see which browser and operating system the user's computer is using. The main reason for this is that in some browsers, certain non-standard code features found ...

Re: George Georgeopoulo

Hi Mary, No, not private, just what I gained from a previous inquiry which I submitted online just as the first lockdown occurred, and which was dealt with when some members of staff returned to work in September 2020. Details as follows: Peter Aitkenhead, Assistant Librarian. Museum of Freemasonry,...

Re: Was he Dennison or Johnson ?

Just because I'm a little bored yet so pleased by Bertie's contributions to my own current thread, here's some more useless information about wills and marriages. Section 18(1) of the Wills Act 1837 set out that a pre-existing will would be invalidated by a subsequent marriage. The Administration of...

Re: George Georgeopoulo

Just to follow up on my last posting Biographical history: The Liberty Lodge, No. 3888 was consecrated on the 18 January 1919. In 1919 the lodge met at the Masonic Hall, Hope Street, Liverpool. In 1994 the lodge left Hope Street and moved to Woolton Hall, Speke Road, Woolton, Liverpool. The lodge he...

That's excellent, thanks Bertie. I will get in touch with my contact at the Museum of Freemasonry and see what else they can dig out. I'll also see if I can find out if the Liberty Lodge 3888 is still active.

Re: George Georgeopoulo

As ever, thanks Bertie. Do you have anything more on the Freemasons? The lodge etc? I have found the Museum of Freemasonary here in London to be extemely helpful in researching membership of their organisation, although I may need to wait after lockdown to pursue that.

Re: Was he Dennison or Johnson ?

SuffolkSandry, Just to confirm that you are right that a subsequent marriage invalidates an earlier will. As for ordering a will, I hope they have got their act together now. The last time I applied for a will shortly after the new fee of £1.50 was introduced, it took them 5 weeks to fulfill the ord...
