British Home Children

After 1850 Poor Law Guardians could send children to Canada and other countries through child emigration schemes and between 1870 and 1914 80,000 children were settled in Canada alone. They became known as @British Home Children'. There were applications for more than 115,000 children between 1901 and 1908, during which time 16,500 were sent from a dozen or so homes and societies in England. Records of many of the homes are in the county or local record office where the home - or it's offices - were and a list of the homes and their receiving areas can be found at

Many homes published annual reports, including testimonies from the children who emigrated and sometimes there are 'before and after' reports of individuals.
There is a database of home children for 1869 to 1930 at

and details about those sent to Australia are at
