This link to join the Lancashire Library might still be useful if it saves the cost of downloads.

"The British Library has put two million digitised pages from 19th century newspapers online, taking research out of its dusty reading rooms into people's homes.

The pay-as-you-go service brings a century of history alive from Jack the Ripper to WG Grace."

"Searches are free
Full-text articles cost £6.99 for a 24-hour pass allowing up to 100 downloads
A seven-day pass costs £9.99 for up to 200 downloads"

Quotes from the BBC News this morning - this was in 2009, if anybody comes across a better link for the Graphic and the Penny Illustrated Paper, which were originally supposed to be free to view on this site, please let us know.

This site appears to have moved to

This site worked well for me today, if slow, and produced three family items new to me. However it seems to have crashed since then, perhaps because of the weight of interest. Here is the key:

EDITED 4 Dec to say the site has been working better for me today, if still a little slow.

I have found this great list of what Old Newspapers are available online for viewing. Not only that but it also tells you whether the site is a pay/subscription site or whether viewing is free - as well as the start and end date of what is viewable.

The Library of Congress has a wonderful collection of online records - including a US Newspaper Directory beginning 1690 with searchable newspapers from 1789.
