I live in the Isle of Man and I am currently researching the QUIRK name. My ggf was born illegitimate c. 1865 - He was christened in the Isle of Man under the name Richard LEWTHWAITE [his mother's surname] but later became known as Richard Lewthwaite QUIRK.
It would now appear that his father may have been a Richard Cesar [Ceasar] QUIRK, born Liverpool c. 1845 and died 9 November 1868 in the Isle of Man.
He was a son of Richard Quirk, born Isle of Man c. 1814, who owned the Cumberland Tavern in James Street, Douglas, isle of Man.
It would appear from the little information I have so far found that Richard Quirk married an Ann Cosnahan [from Patrick, isle of Man] on 15 January 1838 at St Peter, Liverpool. He was thought to be a tailor and the family may have lived in Fleet Street, Liverpool.
Ann died in 1849 and is buried at Braddan, isle of Man.
Richard [b.1814] then married Elizabeth Cosnahan [Ann's sister] on 10 September 1851 at St Peter, Liverpool. Again it is thought at this time that he was still a tailor and the address of Fleet Street, Liverpool is again thought to have been his residence.
There were children to both marriages and some of the births appear to have been in Liverpool and some in the Isle of Man.
I am obviously trying to find out the Liverpool connection at this point of time, so anyone who can shed any light on this for me, or give me any information at all about this family would be greatly appreciated.
ALSO: I WILL BE COMING TO THE UK IN THE VERY NEAR FUTURE TO PICK UP A CAR FROM THE CHESHIRE OAKS AREA. I AM THINKING OF MAKING THIS IN TO A 2 OR 3 DAY BREAK. THIS WOULD ALLOW ME TO STAY IN LIVERPOOL AND POSSIBLY ATTEND THE RECORDS OFFICE IF ANY USEFUL INFORMATION COULD BE OBTAINED FROM THERE.
CAN ANYBODY ADVISE ME HOW I WOULD GO ABOUT THIS AND WHERE I WOULD BE BEST GOING TO? I BELIEVE APPOINTMENTS ETC. WOULD NEED TO BE MADE.
I am sorry to have prattled on so much but just want to get everything straight in my head and it is also confusing with so many Richard's in the family!
Thanks for allowing me to use your forum
Regards
Tony Quirk

Hi and welcome to the forum.
The Liverpool Record Office is on 3rd Floor of the William Brown Street Library, L3 8EW there is limited parking in William Brown Street but a better car park in the road behind, all are pay and display.
The catalogue is here http://liverpool.gov.uk/libraries/archi ... y-history/ but I think everybody agrees that it's not ideal for finding whether the references you want are held on microfilm or in document form. It is usually best if you check the catalogue for any document you might wish to view and then email the library and ask them to check. If the records are in document form you will need to book them together with a space in the Archive Room, giving at least 24 hours notice. If your records are on microfilm/microfiche/on the shelves, then the machines are freely available and don't need to be booked.
It will be best to bring some ID (perhaps a utility bill) so that you can get a library card and pin number, this will enable you to use one of the many computers which have free access to Ancestry and Findmypast among other software.
If you can arrange your visit to include a Tuesday afternoon, the Society hosts a Help Desk at the Record Office between 1.30 and 4.00 pm where we will try to help and point you in some helpful directions.

Re: Help & Advice needed please
Hi Mary
Many thanks for your reply to my post. Your comments are very helpful. I'm a bit in limbo land at present as I have not had any news as to when my new car is arriving at the dealers.
The ideal plan for me would be to try and come over to the UK on a Monday, drop my current car off and pick the new one up at Cheshire Oaks and then travel up to Liverpool and stay at somewhere like the Travelodge etc on the docks. I can then leave the car parked up and walk/bus/taxi to the records office on the Tuesday and do what I need to do and then visit a couple of elderly Aunts on the Wednesday AM before travelling back to the Island on the PM fastcraft.
If it works out that way I would obviously be able to see the staff on your Help Desk and introduce myself.
Let's hope the plan works out that way. If the car delivery is later than expected things may change radically as we will be heading in to the TT Race period and I will be lucky to get a place on the fastcraft/ferry.
in the meantime I'll do some searching on the people I need to find out about and then let the records office know of my pending arrival when I get the nod to come over.
Many thanks again for your time and help

Hi Blue 70
Many thanks for your help. I did get some of my original information from the iMuseum on the Island and that is when I found out about the possible LIverpool links.
I appreciate your help and will try the links given to see what else I can come up with.

Re: Help & Advice needed please
Hi Tony,
I can't find a baptism for the Richard Quirk born in Liverpool in 1845 so the birth certificate which can be ordered from the GRO is probably the next record for you to pursue rather than anything in the Liverpool archives:-
