Birth and first marriage of Mary Charles

Post by dickiesam »

Another crack at breaching a stone wall.....
Trying to find both the birth of Mary Charles and her first marriage to a ? Wilson. So, eyes down and look in.....

Mary Charles [maiden name], bn Liverpool abt 1820/21, was my g.g.g.mother. She married Francis Murphy [carpenter & shipwright] on 25th April 1841 in the Registry Office. She was a widow and had the name Wilson when she married Francis. There is a double entry in the Register giving both surnames. Her father was Hugh Charles, a carpenter. The marriage cert does not indicate whether Hugh was deceased or not.

Her YoB is fairly consistent from 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses. Her marriage cert says she is of 'Full age'. However, it is possible her age was rounded down in 1841 and she stuck with it!

The 1841 Census was taken on the 6th of June some weeks after she had married and she is living with Francis' family. She does not appear to have any children from the first marriage.
HO107 - Piece 565 - Book 8 - Folio 10 - Page 12

In 1851 Francis and Mary with their family are here:
Address: 3 Cotter Street, West Derby, Liverpool
HO107 - Piece 2186 - Folio 109 - Page 14.

All help gratefully accepted! :D

Sorry for negative results, but listing where I've checked, with no results so far

Hi MaryA. Thank you for that extensive 'trawl'. My thinking was that if Mary Charles is anyway near correct with her age she would probably not have married before 1836 which reduces the time frame. She could of course have married a much older man for him to die soon after marriage and the death would have been between 1836 and 1841.

The father Hugh Charles may have been Welsh since Charles is a fairly common Welsh name, as is Hugh. And Mary may not have actually been born in Liverpool but I haven't found a Welsh baptism either.
