22 College Street

Post by Andrew K »

Hi there
I was wondering if anyone could tell me what 22 College Street in the City Centre was used as in the 1870/80s.
I know now it is smack bang in the middle of Liverpool 1 but have found a possible relative there in the 1881 census, describing himself as the property holder, and just wondered if it was simply a dwelling or some kind of business.
Regards
Andrew

College Street N & S are in the Everton area, rather than L1. Do you perhaps mean College lane, behind the Bluecoat?

22 College Lane

Post by dickiesam »

Hi,
In the 1871 #22 College Lane is an unoccupied warehouse. In 1881 it would appear to have been 'redeveloped' and is now two dwellings, #s 22 and 22A. #22 has Frederick and Emma Boston and Ann Rice, a widow + her daughter, while 22A houses the Dixons.

I think the occupation of 'Property holder' attributed to Frederick Boston is a general term and could mean he is the 'key holder'or 'caretaker' of what remains of the warehouse. He is perhaps a bit young to be the owner.

In 1891 there appears to be a 'hole-in-the-wall' between #s 16 and 24 with nothing shown. In the 1901 there's still a gap between #s 16 and 24 but #16 appears to be a boarding house. So perhaps #s 16, 18, 20 and 22 were knocked together?

As Daggers stated College St N & S were in Everton according to 1873 Kellys/Gores Directory.
As Dickiesame wrote, College Lane is listed, 22 has Coulson Steel & Co brewers.
(No. 18 had the Ragged School, god love them)

1873 is also like the Ragged Directory, it's a nightmare, everything all over the place.
Give me a surname & I'll do me best....

I believe the address to be 22 College Lane, not Street

There are a number of families at 22, the household above are the Dixons and then come 70 year old widower Ann Rice, laundress and her daughter Elizabeth 33 (deaf, dumb and partially blind) poor girl.

Same address but separate household is
Frederick Boston Head M 24 Property Holder Lancashire Cabbage Hall
Emma Boston Wife M 23 Yorkshire, Market Drayton
RG11; Piece: 3613; Folio: 89; Page: 29

Next address is Peters Lane.

Checking newspapers, at the moment the only item I've found and of course it's not conclusive that it would be your man is

Liverpool Mercury etc (Liverpool, England), Friday, May 15, 1885
SHARPERS AT CHESTER RACES
....Frederick Boston, Liverpool, gaming with dice, seven days' hard labour. ....

and possibly the same person as above, but the age may prove that it's not your man

Liverpool Mercury etc (Liverpool, England), Tuesday, October 28, 1890
CITY SESSIONS - Pleaded Guilty
Frederick Boston, 50, gas fitter, for having on 6th September, feloniously received a watch, the property of Michael Kiernan, knowing the same to have been stolen, seven days.

That is all very interesting. And I apologise it was College Lane.
I am trying to discover if Frederick Boston is the son of Mary Boston, the wife of Francis Boston.
I know that Francis died in 1848 and his wife was called Mary but she then disappears.
I can find no birth decord for this Frederick Boston which makes me wonder if Mary remarried had a son and then at some point reverted to using her first married name.
I know that Frederick's mother was called Mary Boston and that she lived until at least 1901 but I am unclear if it is the same Mary as it gives her place of birth as Liverpool but my Mary was actually born in Northwich sometime around 1825.
This is all very interesting and I am really grateful.

Hi Andrew
In 1881 census Fredk was born in 1857 a long time after Francis death?
Birthplace Cabbage Hall Lancs, I've only ever found near Tarporley in Ches? or a Hall near Delamere Forest.
Have you found Fredk in 1861 census at all?

Tina :)

Cabbage Hall

Post by Andrew K »

Hi Tina
Cabbage Hall is an area of Anfield, in fact there is still a pub there called The Cabbage Hall which is a driking haunt for Liverpool fans prior to a game.
From what I can gather it used to be a bit of a waste ground.
I am certain that Frederick can't be related to Francis who is my blook relative but his mother is Mary Boston and I am trying to piece together what happened to the Mary Boston that was married to Francis after he died.
Francis and Mary do not appear in any census at all.
I know she was born Mary Stubbs in Northwich and I suspect around 1825. Her family moved to Runcorn some time later.
I don't know where Francis was born (circa 1807) but on their wedding certificate (1847) his father was listed as being called Cato Boston a liveryman. We suspect that Francis was black and I think he or his father were born in America.
We know Francis died in 1848 and after that Mary disappears. Their daughter, Lourina (b1848) tunrs up in the 1851 and 1861 census with Mary's family in Runcorn.
There is no death certificate for Mary hence I wondered if she had remarried. Frederick's mother Mary would be about the right age but, if it is my Mary that doesn't explain why Frederick would be called Boston. As I say she might not be the right Mary Boston.
Confused - I know I am but thanks for looking.

This is a long shot and I know it is an old post but I am hoping Andrew K is still on the site - Emma Boston was my great grandmother and Frederick Boston was listed as the father of my grandmother Ada Boston. I have been trying for years to find any information about them so I home I Andrew K will get in touch
