Liverpool Burials

Hi, could anybody help me trace the burials of my grandparents, my grandmother was Margaret Jane Gardner b,1891 d,19th June 1930, i have a copy of the death certificate and she died in hospital at 147a Mill Road? My grandfather was Thomas Gardner b,1889 d,13th December 1937, again i have a copy of the death certificate, and his death occured at 107 Rice Lane, if anyone could point me in the right direction i would be most grateful.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I have checked what is available on Ancestry with no success, so presumably they were not RC as they don't appear in the Ford/Yew Tree Register, and there are not many for those dates in the other burials online.

Good that you have the exact dates, you will need to check the burial registers for the cemeteries where they may be buried, Anfield and West Derby are probably the most likely and you would also need to check if their local church had a graveyard although it may be unlikely at that date but it's worth looking, as is also the Crematorium Records.

Records are held at the Liverpool Record Office, 3rd Floor William Brown Street Library.

If you need help getting started the Society hosts a Help Desk on Tuesday afternoons between 1.30 and 4.00 pm, they will help you use the microfilm and find out how to discover which records you need to look for.

Since you have exact dates of death it would be worth checking newspapers for death notices and funeral announcements. And consider contacting Anfield Crematorium in case they were cremated. http://liverpool.gov.uk/births-marriage ... rematoria/

Springwood Crematorium can be discounted because it didn't open until 1975.

You had a question mark after 147a Mill Road. This was a commonly used pseudo address for the hospital which was originally the infirmary attached to the workhouse there. Mill Road Infirmary was part of the West Derby Workhouse which had the same pseudo address.

The new Women's Hospital on Mill Road was opened in 1932 on the site of the infirmary. The new building also housed the amalgamation of Shaw St Special Hospital for Women and the Samaritan Hospital for Women based in Upper Parliament St.

Similarly, 107 Rice Lane was the infirmary attached to Rice Lane Workhouse and which became Walton Hospital.

Fancy me forgetting that, yes the obituary in the newspaper is the first thing to look for, within a few days after the date of death.

Just returned from my visit to Liverpool and its good news!! Went to the Records Office and explained what the purpose of my visit was, and a very helpful lady looked up the names i was looking for and she found them!!. Both buried in West Derby Cemetery, so off on a bus to the cemetery and after some searching, i found Thomas Gardner's plot, but because it was getting dark did'nt get time to look for Margaret Jane Gardner's plot,{not buried together} but will return next week, i notice on a print out i have, regarding burial, it say's Public, so i presume that they was paupers, sad i know, but at least i have found Grandparents i never knew before.

Well done, glad you got a good result.

A general grave is not necessarily a paupers grave, but is a shared grave with others, the family may not have been able to afford to purchase a grave, but the funeral still was paid for.

Managed to get a copy of mums birth certificate, and place of birth says 400 Hut Queens Road,
could anyone give me information on these Hut's? Was this some kind of housing for the poor?

Wondering which Queens Road it might be? Googling I found at least three, two of which were outside the 'city' bounds....
Queens Rd, Crosby, Liverpool L23 5TR and Queen's Rd, Formby L37 2HG. The third runs between Breck Road and West Derby Road.

Was the Home Address on the cert the same as the place of birth? Would like to see the 400 Hut, Queens Road entry on the cert. Can you scan that particular section and post it here?
