Can anyone tell me where to apply for a Will from the IOM. (1902)
Please.
Is it York or would it be over there. An English man spent most of his life on the Island

Hi Germaine, I got a copy of a Will dated 1905 from the LDS - I had to collect the copy from my local centre but it didnt take too long in arriving.

Hope that helps - Holly

If probate was granted in the Isle of Man it appears that all wills from before 1911 are held at the Manx museum. If probate was granted in England and Wales it will be different hence my question.

Hi Germaine,
Have you checked the England and Wales Probate Register to see if the will was probated here?
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=1904

If it isn't there you could try a mail or phone call to the Manx Museum asking about their archives..
Promotions.MNH@gov.im

or by phone at (01624) 648013.

The mailing address is:
Manx National Heritage
Manx Museum
Kingswood Grove
Douglas, Isle of Man IM1 3LY

If they can't give you an answer they will probably pass your query on to someone who can.

Hi Germaine

I think the index information provided for those Manx Wills are to help identify them. I think the Manx Museum will have them on microfiche. I've contacted the museum in the past and they have sent me JPEGs of pages from parish registers from the microfiche. Quite reasonable price too earlier this year I got three records for the standard price of £5. I sent them a cheque through the post with a letter detailing the records requested and specifying I wanted them e-mailed as JPEGs. Get them to e-mail it to save on postage. They will only do a few records any more than that and they will ask you to use a researcher. Try the following e-mail address I would be interested in their response myself as I have ancestors on the Manx Will indexes and haven't got around yet to investigating them:-

library@mnh.gov.im

Manx National Heritage
Manx Museum
Douglas
Isle of Man

Hopefully they will ask you to send them a cheque for £5. If they mention using researchers say it's only for a couple of wills to be e-mailed as JPEGs. If they refer you to the charges information for copying etc just say you've seen it and ask them to confirm that it costs £5. They should do it for you.

Hi Germaine

Here is a useful guide to Manx Wills. They do mention providing copies of Wills at reasonable prices so you should be able to get your records:-

Good result Germaine, perhaps when you receive your copies you'd be good enough to write a summary of the links you found useful and the costs involved etc. to put on our Websites Board so that the details can be easily found by others in the future.

Hi Germaine

That's great news. I suppose the cost for Wills is slightly different to obtaining parish records in that Wills can be more than one page. The cost might be more than £5 depending on how many pages there are in the Wills.

Hi Blue yes just got the cost am now waiting for them to come through. Looks like lots of reading for me.
1 Will 12 pages the other 8 so £20. Will be worth it to solve a puzzle.
The man is really nice and helpful. Made it so easy.
