EUNSON FAMILY FROM FAIR ISLE AND SHETLAND ISLES
EUNSON FAMILY FROM FAIR ISLE AND SHETLAND ISLES
Members of the Eunson family emigrated from Shetland during the clearancs. #they went to Canada,Australia and New Zealand etc. My branch got as far as Liverpool, Probably poor sailors like me! They were the family of Walter Eunson, born in Fair Isle 1776. One of them showed up in Toxteth Park but I can't seem to find whether Robert or James was the father of Jane Emma Eunson, my Grandmother. There may be a link to the Isle of Man. Since time is limited for research, and Mum is 92 this year, I would like to have this information for her, and would appreciate any help. Regards, Eunice

www.lancashirebmd.org.uk has a Jame Emma Eunson marrying a Cornelius D'Arcy in Blackburn in 1919. Is this your mum's parents? If so if you purchase the marriage certificate that will give you Jane Emma's father's name.

Walter Eunson
Thanks folks for some great info. Walter Eunson was a pauper because the offshore landlord had a fixed price for buying everything produced and only he could buy it! Bit like the big supermarkets today. Eight Acres and a Boat by George Stout tells the true story. Eventually many families moved off Fair Isle to Orkney and Shetland where they worked in the fishing industry. Some prospered and the others emigrated. Your enthusiam is much appreciated.
Kate Eunson
It may be because Kate ran away with another man, leaving her children. She was ten years younger than her husband so who knows why. I fear she may have had to much of a romantic nature, like me. Those other young children could have been her second family? [/u]

Discussion about the FMP transcriptions has been split to a separate topic, however this is Dickiesam's last post which relates to both really.
And finally... in case anyone is struggling to find the Eunson family in FMP in 1901... they have been transcribed as Emison. I reported the error and received this...
We have reviewed the transcription changes that you have reported:
Record set: 1901 census
Census reference: RG13 Piece:3439 Folio:27 Page:45
Last name from 'Emison' to 'EUNSON'
After careful consideration we have decided that an amendment to the transcription is not required.
In fairness to FMP, while I know the name is Eunson it definitely looks like Emison on the census summary page. And FMP says...
If the transcription matches what the enumerator wrote on the census, then we will not amend it as we aim to provide you with an exact copy of the original census page.

Re: EUNSON FAMILY FROM FAIR ISLE AND SHETLAND ISLES
Sorry about the lapse, and thanks to all for your help. Mum passed away nearly two years ago in May, so life has taken a different direction and I only got back to the family history last week, aided by a possible Eunson relative in Australia who is much more experienced, but still finding that glitch we have hard to fathom. Children were adopted but were cousins, not Mum's siblings. Your info is very useful. I will post what I find out on Wednesday since I may just have some more news then. Does anyone know why so many Eunsons were tailors, note sail makers? Must become a member too.
