James Randall Scott b1817; Poole, Dorset to Liverpool.

Greetings from Australia.
I'm chasing the Scott family, who originated from Poole, Dorset, and were apparently involved in the shipping industry. The original James Scott was born c1790 and married Elizabeth Randall at Poole in 1815. This James was a 'Shiopwner' and Master Mariner, and the couple had 9 children. One of the children was my great, great grandmother, Sophia Jane Scott b1827 and she married a William Lash Heyward in London before departing for Australia, where they raised their family. William Lash Heyward was also a Master Mariner. Of the other Scott children, James Randall Scott b1817, Augustus Frederick Scott b1821, Edwin Wade Scott b1825 and perhaps William Henry Scott b18130 (he died in Australia), were all Master Mariners, and were all born at Poole, Dorset. James Randall Scott appears for have moved from his birthplace of Poole to Liverpool, where he married Anne Mason in 1839. Their children were Edwin William Scott b1853, Ann Mason Scott b1848, Elizabeth Mason Scott b1840, Emma Sophia Scott b1851, Mary Louisa Scott b1846 and Mercy Louisa Scott b1845...all born at Liverpool, Lanc.
The Scott family vanish in and out of the Census records, and I think that I have found some of them in South Africa and Chile...so it is obvious that they travelled a lot. I would love to find someone connected to the children of James Randall Scott, in the attempt to put the Scott story together. Anyone out there connected to the Scott family from the 1850's??
Many thanks,
Rap

Hi Hilary,
Many thanks for your warm welcoming response!
Thankyou also for the death info for Mercy Louisa...yes, I do have the baptisms of the children, but had not found this death or the death of Edwin William...so that is great!
I have made some progress with the Scott family, having found Emma Sophia b1851 (daughter of James Randall Scott & Anne Mason) married to a Joshua Orrett in 1873, and the couple immigrating to Canada in 1875...this is a great find, as it now confirms that the Scott family did re-settle in different countries. I am off to find more of them in Canada and the USA. I guess if you have your own shipping business, you could go 'anywhere' in those days!!
Thankyou for your time and effort Hilary.
Best wishes

Hello Rap and welcome from the Wild West!
Good luck, you've come to the right place.
I'm guessing you have James Randall in 1861 census?
and Ann and kiddies in 1851?
Best wishes

Hi Tina
Thankyou for your warm wishes.....yes, I have the Census records thanks....just trying to track down some of the old newspapers from Toronto Ontario to see if there was anything of interest that happened to the family of James Randall Scott and Ann Mason once they had immigrated in 1875. I think that I am making progress slowly with this lot...it's a bit like trying to find 'Smiths' and 'Jones'...there's thousands of them!!
So many thanks Tina for your time, and with my best wishes

Hi Carole,
Thanks so much for this information...I have little bits of it, but you have been able to fill in some dates for me. Yes, William Lash was a widow, and I have found his first wife buried in Sri Lanka. I can't find any sign of this first marriage in records, so assume that someone has married them on board one of the ships at some time...or perhaps they were married in some other country!! So much yet to find of this story 'me thinks'!!
Thankyou for your kind help.
Best wishes

Dear MaryA,
I was thrilled two weeks ago or so, on the occasion of my first geneaeolgy research attempt through Internet, to come across a message from a certain Rap who wrote : "I would love to find someone connected to the children of James Randall Scott, in the attempt to put the Scott story together. Anyone out there connected to the Scott family from the 1850's ?" That message was sent out on June 14, 2011 -- already three years ago !
Well, here I am... James Randall Scott was my Great-grand-father !
Of course, I never met him, but knew of his existence through my father, William Joshua Orrett (born on April 4, 1888 / died on July 6, 1981). He lived all his life in Toronto, Canada. His Mother was Emma Sophia Scott, daughter of James Randall Scott. As I am not home at present, I do not have all my data with me. But I do know that my Grandmother was buried with her husband, Joshua Orrett, in the same grave at St. John-the-Baptist Norway Cemetery in Toronto. On the tomb-stone is marked: "Emma Sophia Scott, daughter of Captain Scott of Liverpool, died at age 57 years". I have a photo of the tomb-stone which is available.
The William Joshua Orrett family is composed of seven children : 5 boys and two girls. I am the youngest of the family and am presently 82 years of age. I too am an "immigrant" having left Canada for France many years ago to marry a kind, loving Frenchman, Etienne Huser, who passed away in 2010. We have three children. France is my home...
I would be very grateful if you would deliver this message to Rap, as I am anxious to come in contact with my far-away relatives and to share information about our families -- direct descendants of James Randall Scott.
Thank you kindly in advance for your help in this matter. I do hope that our combined efforts will be crowned with success.
Warm greetings from France,
"Little Dorrett"

Re: CAPTAIN JAMES RANDALL SCOTT
Dear MaryA and Tina,
Thank you both for your prompt replies to my message of yesterday. I am sincerely disappointed that you are not able to get in contact with Rap. In the course of three years, many events can happen and I rather feared that there might be no further contact with your Forum from this person, as such is the case. Nonetheless, I shall go ahead by supplying further information which may be of interest to Tina or others who may be looking for information about Captain James Randall Scott's descendants.
First of all, I take the liberty to correct a sentence appearing in a message from Rosie to Tina (undated). It was not James Randall Scott and Ann Mason who immigrated to Toronto in 1875, but Joshua Orrett and Emma Sophia Scott (my paternal Grandparents). James Randall Scott and his wife lived in Liverpool and never left England.
My Father was not very communicative concerning his parents, which is most unfortunate as many questions remain unanswered for us all. Grandfather Joshua Orrett was a Master Cabinet Maker and as such found no problem to land a job upon arrival in Canada. He worked for many years as foreman in a biscuit-making factory called Christie Brown and Company, located in Toronto. He built his own home on 41 De Grassi Street where, to my knowledge, my Father was born and lived until his marriage with Lillian Foster in 1914. On my last visit to Toronto in 2012, with my daughter, we went together to see the home that Grandfather Joshua had built. Unfortunately it had been torn down, along with some others on the street, and the location has been turned into a nice little park. My brother Jack thinks, but is not sure, that he built another house by himself as well. I know nothing about Grandmother Emma Sophia except that "she did not put enough butter on the bread" !! (My Dad's only comment...)
Joshua Orrett and Emma Sophia Scott had four children : John / Ida / Minnie / and William Joshua (my Father). I am working on their birth and death dates -- as I am able. The data is not yet complete.
However, in the past few years -- as time and circonstances have allowed -- I have concentrated particularly on my Mother's ancestors. Just recently I have turned my attention to research on the Orrett clan.
For your interest -- and I hope it will help to fill in the family tree of my Great-Grandfather, Captain James Randall Scott --
please find below data concerning the family of William Joshua Orrett (his Grandson and my Father):
1) Gordon Donaldson Orrett (1915 -- 1994) Commercial Manager / No descesndants
2) William Scott Orrett (1917 -- 2010) Radio and TV Engineer / 3 children
3) Lillian (Bette) Audrey Orrett (1922 -- 2004) Accountant / 1 daughter
4) Jack Thomas Orrett (1924 -- ...) Computer technician / 5 children
5) Frank Albert Orrett (1927 -- 1969) Accountant / 3 children
6) Thomas James Orrett (1930 -- 1997 ?) School Principal / 5 children
7) Doris Susan Orrett (1932 -- ...) Secretary / 3 children

Still-born female (1936 -- date of our Mother's decease)
I have made up this list by memory (not having my data with me), so there may be an error or two, particularly concerning time of deaths.
Dear friends, that is all for now. In the coming months I shall try to get the Orrett data finalized. I shall pass it on in the hope that it may be of interest to someone "out there" -- particularly Rap who seems to have lost contact with the Forum.
Greetings from France,
Little Dorrett

Hi everyone, this is a really interesting thread as I am distantly related to this Scott line but through Elizabeth Mary Scott, daughter of James Scott and Sophia Button, and sister to James Scott who marries Elizabeth Randell, who are the parents of Sophia Jane Scott who marries a William Lash Heyward. (I'm also interested in mariners who sailed the Pacific, and especially around New Zealand and between Australia and New Zealand because I have a mystery master mariner known only as Whitehouse who is supposedly the father of another ancestor in the early 1830s). Elizabeth Mary Scott marries a Walter Cr(a)ufurd Kennedy and I am also a Kennedy descendant.
I noted with interest that William Lash Heyward/Heywood also appeared to be in New Zealand as well as Victoria - but they appear to be different people (even though the similarity in name seems more than coincidental). The William Lash Heywood in New Zealand emigrates with his father, Thomas, and mother, Elizabeth, (previously Trist, maiden name Lash) in 1856 on the ship 'Inchinnan'. This William Lash Heywood was 9 years old in 1856, married a Mary Margaret Garlick and died in New Zealand on either 10 Dec 1920 or 8 July 1920 in either Wellington or Waipawa whereas the William Lash Heyward who marries Sophia Jane Scott dies in Victoria, Australia in 1886. Henrietta Olive Heyward, a younger sister of William Lash Heyward, marries John Godrich Lash in New Zealand in 1866.
I'm hoping someone else may have been able to work out if there is a connection between the two families and to sort out who the parents of the Australian William Lash Heyward are because some trees appear to have picked up the details for the New Zealand William Lash Heywood/Heyward family.
I wondered if anyone has much information about James Scott the ship owner and which ships he owned. I'm determined to work out who my mysterious 'Whitehouse' really was.
Cheers, giludru
