I'm looking at a marriage certificate for Janet Harvey and Henry Jones married 31 August 1886 at the Holy Trinity Church in the Parish of Walton on Hill county of Lancaster.

A simply googling led me to the Holy Trinity Church, Walton Breck, Breck road, built 1847. It's in Walton on the Hill (parish matches) and has the right name. I don't think this is the right one though as this is a Toxteth family and it seems completely wrong for them to marry so far from home - especially as Janet's witness, Mary Ellen Napoleon (great name!) married at the same church a couple of years later.

I strongly suspect that the church concerned must have been Holy Trinity Church, Toxteth park, Parliament street but can't work the parish out. Was Toxteth really in the same parish as the name of the village some miles the other side of Liverpool or am I letting the similarity of names mislead me.

Some local advice would be much appreciated!

Within minutes of making this post I've spotted fairly strong evidence that the church is in Toxteth but still can't work out the parish bit.

The vicar than married them was named "Postance" and according to the British History Online website (http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report ... mpid=41287) he was Vicar of Holy Trinity Church, Parliament Street, from 1858 till his death in 1893.

For many years the parish of Walton covered Liverpool, which probably accounts for what you found.
HT Toxteth stood in Parliament St near the junction of Beaufort St. Built in 1858, though the parish dated from 1856, it survived until 1940 when it was offered for sale and then demolished.
Most of the Victorian churches were opened as chapels of ease to the older parishes, as populations soared, receiving parish status after varying years.

At the date you are interested in, Walton on the Hill was more important than Liverpool, although Liverpool was expanding hugely and became even more populated around the 1840's due to the famine in Ireland and so many immigrants arriving.

But St Mary's Walton was the Parish Church before the expansion of Liverpool, and the parish extended to cover most of what was Liverpool and also Toxteth Park
