Lord Sefton's Estate

I am helping research Frederick or Fred Dunning. I understand he was an estate work on Lord Sefton's estate and had a cottage somewhere where Deysbrook Lane and Mab Lane meet in the Croxteth area. He was there circa 1911. Would there be any surviving estate records which may show him as a worker and if so where would they be?

Now I may be wrong but I believe those records are still held at Knowsley Hall and are very difficult to get to research.

I think Jan knows quite a fair bit about them, I'll send her a pm and ask her to look at your query and respond if she knows anything.

Molyneux of Sefton records are at Lancashire Record Office under the coding DDM. They have a whole file index of DDM - you can spend hours just reading it - I have at Lancashire Record Office!!

It was teh Derby family at Knowsley and yes lots of their records are still at Knowsley Hall but a fair proprtion are at Lancashire Record Office.

Hi Everyone,

Most of the records that were at Lancashire RO for the Earl's of Derby (Stanley's of Knowsley) are mainly at Knowsley Hall, when I was looking for records for Bootle some years ago, I contacted the curator at Knowsley Hall, a very nice woman, but she said all the minuments (as she called them) were in no sort of order, and it would take months for her to get through them all!! I told her the ref numbers of the documents I was interested in, and she said she could have a look, but the search fee would have been £20 an hour!!

Public research at the hall is not permitted!

I don't know if she ever got all those papers sorted out, but it would have taken her a very long time.

Hope that has been of some help.

Glad that I've been proved wrong and that you might get a result if you use the Lancs RO. Sorry to have dragged Jan in with the wrong idea, but better somebody try than no responses hey?

You can contact Betty Brown at the Molyneux Society. She is an expert on the Molyneux family. There has been a huge amount of research on the Molyneux clan from Knowsley. I am one of them lol. Betty is based in Prescott.
