Bootle Cemetery

Hello everyone,

I read in another thread that there is a Bootle Cemetery expert on here :D

I have a consecrated ground deed of grant dated 1923, and listed on the back are 3 of my ancestors, buried between 1923 and 1940.

It says plot 134 in section 3.

I went to the cemetary today and there were 3 sections numbered 3... CE3, RC3 and NC3.

Having never really been to a cemetery before I figured that meant Roman Catholic, Church of England, and Non-Conformist (or Non-Christian) - would that be about right?

As far as I can tell my family are C of E for as far back as I can find.

I looked at 134 in the RC3 section and they were not my family, but in the CE3 section I really struggled to find any plot numbers. The RC3 was really ordered and everything in lines, the CE3 section was a bit more "ad-hoc".

The sun went down before I could check NC3.

To make matters worse, my grandmother (who is not all there mentally any more since she is 97) thinks that there wasn't a headstone, just a numbered plot - so I might actually be looking for nothing!

I was hoping there would be a headstone to try and give me some more information.

I'm really hoping someone knows exactly where 134 section 3 is - and beyond that hoping that there is a headstone!

The three family names that would be in the grave according to this deed are named Owens, Clark and Evans.

Thanks in advance for any information!

Hi and welcome to the forum.

The link for cemeteries in the Sefton area says that any further information for Bootle cemetery would be obtained from the office at the Thornton Garden of Rest. The contact details are here

They will probably have a plan, which so far we don't seem to have managed to find one online as we usually keep a note of any we come across.

I hope they will be able to tell you whether there is also a headstone.

I think the staff at Thornton (for a small fee) will tell you all the pople buried in the grave. They do in Southport (also Sefton) I once got 8 names addresses, age etc all for I thin £6 well worth it.

Hi Alasala,

Welcome to the forum,

Bootle cem can be a bit daunting to find graves, the Catholic Section seems to be better arranged and numbered wheras other sections are a bit mis-hap!

Here is a map of the cem. I did put it on here some time ago, but I don't know what happened to it!

There is a map of the cem on a board when you walk in the Linacre Lane entrance.

Thanks for the help so far. I used the map in the cemetery to find the 3 section 3's (RC3, CE3, NC3) but I was struggling to find the numbered plot in CE3.

In RC3 something like 1 in 3 headstones had a plot number etched onto them, and they went up and down in straight rows.

In the CE3 section I could only find 2 plot numbers, 297 and 404. The headstones all seem to be a lot older in that section. It would be nice if the cemetery map had some way of showing where the plot numbers map out to.

I will go back next week with more daylight time to spare.

Thanks
Alasala

Contact Thornton Garden of Rest before you go, they may be able to stop you just wandering around aimlessly. Link given in my post above.

Thanks Mary, I didn't know where I had put the map originally.

Alasala,

I think your best bet would be to contact Thornton as suggested, they will be able to tell you who is in the grave and if there is/was a headstone.

A lot of the headstones in Bootle cem have been either removed or damaged over the years.

I was in there some time ago looking for a headstone for someone, like you I had the plot and grave number in the CE section, but I couldn't find a headstone, I spoke to one of the cem workers and asked if he could point me in the right direction, he was very helpful, but he did say they are not in order!

The funny thing was, while I was looking, I came across another headstone by chance of someone else's family that I had been helping them research, we had no idea that they were buried in Bootle cem, so I went home, got the camera and took photo's of the headstone for the person. I wonder what the odds are of finding something like that?
