Hi,
Please confirm how you know William actually married Catherine Claugue? If her very unusual surname is on a birth cert for one of the children please scan the image and post it here so we can have a looksee. I ask because there isn't a single Claugue in England and Wales in 1881 and 1891! But there is a Claug family in Liverpool.

EDIT: For the crew... The family address in 1891 is 39 Rhyl Street, Walton On The Hill, Bootle. Catherine's origin is blank on the 1891 but a later census says Ballasalla, IoM. Married 25 years putting the year abt 1885. And! They had 10 kiddies, all living!

This is one of the easiest ways to post an image on this forum:
1) Make sure the image scan is the best quality image you can manage and is a reasonable size. You should crop the image to show only the part that is being queried, such as a name. If you don't have an image cropping utility you can use the one on the Photobucket site.

2) If you are not already a member paste http://photobucket.com/ into your browser and join the site. Photobucket is a free image hosting website.

3) Follow the onscreen instruction to upload your picture to the site. Save the picture to your 'album'. When you run the mouse over the picture a small drop-down menu will appear. Left-click on the IMG Code in that menu. A yellow box flashes up, with Copied written in it.

4) Now go to the 'Post a reply' box on the forum topic where you want show your photo. Write your message then page down one or two lines. Place the cursor at the left of the message window, right-click the mouse and select Paste. This will paste the code that you copied from Photobucket into your message. The picture will not immediately appear. It only comes up when you click Preview to see your image before you submit your message or click Submit to send the message and image to the forum topic.
Good luck,

Childrens baptisms are on Ancestry, nothing on them to indicate maiden name

If William and Catherine were married it looks very much like an IoM marriage, circa 1885. Can't find them anywhere else.

I think you need to confirm mum's maiden name by getting a birth certificate of one of the children..
does the letter you have found refer to Clague being Catherine's maiden name or does it just mention the name in some other context?

I've tried to find a marraige on here

http://www.manxbmd.com/index.html

but don't think the index transcriptions are complete yet :(

Alice's birth reg

Alice Scarfe Cain
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1891
Registration district: West Derby
Inferred County: Lancashire
Volume: 8b
Page: 457

you can order the certficate from here

Hi

Can you get hold of that marriage certificate? It will tell you the details of William's and Catherine's fathers' and we can try and confirm them on the census...

which image can't you see? I have only posted the 2 marriage certficates, one for Alice and one for Esther?

Here is the marriage record below. Please note that the church is Holy Trinity, Toxteth Park. Walton on the Hill was the old parish name for the area that included Toxteth Park. Most Manx people headed for Toxteth when they arrived in Liverpool there was a Manx community there:-

Well done Blue! Breakthrough...
There's a whole heap of CLAGUE folk in Lancashire in 1881 and 1891. And they say... what's in a name? A lot I say! And Thomas Clague seems to be a preferred name for a policeman from the IoM. Found 3 so far in Liverpool in 1891. :D Unfortunately none of them are doubling up as labourers. :)
