Ditto Bertieone's query!
If career changes are the wonderment....
My father started his working life as a cooper in 1918 in a family of coopers going back at least3 generations. Then in the late 1920s he was in West Africa as an raw oil buyer for a company owned by Lever Bros. After the crash of 1929 he was a labourer in Liverpool for 3 years and when he died in 1954 he had been a clock and watchmaker for over 15 years.

In 1871 Samuel was a leather warehouseman and in 1881 a leather dresser. As his father was a farmer, perhaps he was helping out before moving to Liverpool to continue his trade in the leather industry.
