Kinross Road, Waterloo

Hello Everyone - my first post here!

Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction to find names of people who lived in Kinross Road in the 1930s, please?

My parents, William Everett and Ellen Ward were married on 7 June 1933 at St. Sebastien's Church, Lockerby Road, Fairfield. I don't know where they lived immediately following their marriage, but, I know they were for a while in Kinross Road. In looking through an old photo album, I have found a photo of them with my brother, as a baby, in the garden of the house in Kinross Road, belonging to, I think, a Cyril and Mary, which must have been taken in early 1935. My parents had left there by 1940 when I was born.

I know my parents lived, probably as lodgers with the couple, who are also on the photo, and I remember visiting the house when I was about 6 or 7 yrs old. I recalled their first names, but cannot for the life of me remember their surname, or the house number.

Would Electoral Rolls help, and how could I access these? Given that I now live in France, I can't just 'pop in' to Waterloo Town Hall (I was married in the Church opposite - St. Thomas of Canterbury!) or wherever the records would be kept these days. So any pointers would be gratefully received.

Blue,

Many thanks for your speedy reply. Unfortunately, none of the names 'rings a bell'. I may be mistaken about the first names of the couple - although I do remember my mother referring to someone whom she called 'Mary Mac'.
Never mind, I was only trying to add more info. to my Everett Family Tree.

I will be in Crosby Library on Friday doing a Family History Help desk so I will have a look in an electoral roll for 1935 if they have them.

Hi and welcome to the forum. I had a quick look at the telephone directories online but no Everetts listed for that street, obviously impossible for a Cyril without a surname.

There are obviously more houses than are listed in the directory so perhaps they might be listed in the Electoral Registers.

Added afterwards, I think Hilary's kind offer has crossed with me typing this post.

I had thought I had just submitted a reply to Hilary, but I seemed to have got up in 'Review your post' situation and am stuck!

Here goes again!

Thank you Hilary for your kind offer. Cyril and Mary would have still been living in Kinross Road into the 1940s, as I remember visiting them as a child, and I was born in 1940. My mother used to refer to a Mary Mac, so that might lead to a surname? Would my parents have been registered on the electoral rolls if they were lodgers, or was it still only householders at that time?

Thank you Mary for looking up telephone directories. If there had been a 'phone in the house it would probably have been in the name of the couple whose house it was.

A helpful suggestion was made to me, via a pm, that I send for my brother's Birth Cert. which should give my parents' address in 1934. Sending for the BC had not occurred to me as obviously I know the relevant names that would be on it - hadn't considered the address!! My brother died a few years ago, and there is no one else available for me to ask.

I have now ordered this from GRO, but do not expect it for some time as I ordered it over the Easter w/e, and the date for dispatch is given as 8 April. As I live in France I always have to add on extra days for delivery.

Will let you know what I discover in about a fortnight's time!

I had a look at the Electoral Roll for 1945. The only Cyril in the whole of Kinross Road was at number 3.

3 Kinross Road
Richard Bramhall
Margaret McIlhagga
Mary McIlhagga
Cyril W Stubbs

Cyril appears to have married on 26 Dec 1920 at St Bridget Wavertree to an Annie Hurst. You can see the marriage on Ancestry. It states he was a police Constable. He died in Crosby in 1966 born in 1898.

Margaret seems to have died in Crosby in 1957. Her laste husband was Crawford.

Could this be the people you are after?

Hilary, thank you so much, that is great - as soon as I saw his name on the list you sent, I immediately remembered that he was indeed Cyril Stubbs!

As a child I always assumed he and Mary, whom my mother always referred to as Mary Mac, were married. Looks like they were not! So I am assuming that Mary Mac is the Mary McIlhagga whom you found living there, and as my parents had been lodgers at that house before I was born, maybe Cyril was a lodger there, too - or maybe it was his house?

I never knew what work he had done, but remembering his upright bearing, I am not surprised to hear that he was a policeman. One thing I remember was that he could play the banjo, and for a short while he attempted to teach me! But I think my hands were too small to allow my fingers to reach around the neck to hold the 'strings' down correctly!

The photograph I have is of Cyril and Mary with my late brother taken about 1935 in the garden of, what I now know to be number 3, Kinross Road.

Thank you so much for taking the trouble to find that bit of my family jigsaw. Finding dates of BMD on Ancestry, or elsewhere, is only the bare bones, it's putting names, stories and places on those bones which I find so satisfying!

Hi everyone, there's a Cyril Walker Stubbs 3 yrs in 1901 census in Tox Park.

He died in Crosby in 1977.

Yes Tina - that is him. He appears in the 1911 census, too, showing as youngest of quite a brood - son of a Bookbinder.

I have this morning found him on the Merchant Navy records - including a photo! - for the date range 1918 - 1921. His Identity Cert. is given as 424673, but there is no Discharge No. or ship numbers shown. I wonder if this is how my parents knew him - my Dad was in the Merchant Navy, too!

As he married on 26 Dec 1920, and shown on the Parish Register as a Police Constable, it sounds as if he was not in the Merchant Navy for long.

I have found the name Annie Stubbs on the Death Index for both 1927 and 1929 in Liverpool, but of course no other details are given on the Index, so I can't be sure it was his wife. It could be that when he was in Kinross Road he was a widower?

Thanks all, for your continued interest.

The 1927 entry, if it is the one for the Liverpool registration district that you are looking at, is in the Probate Calendar - "of Calton Avenue, Wavertree .... wife of William Stubbs ..... journeyman painter"

Oh dear! Not Cyril's wife then. Never mind, I was only curious about his earlier life because of his connection with my parents, not because I particularly wanted to follow him up in detail.

But I am glad I found his Merchant Navy record, because that could be a clue as to how Mum and Dad came to be lodging in the same house as him. He and my Dad might have met in the MN, who knows?

I am still awaiting my brother's Birth Cert. to see if they were living at Kinross Road when he was born.

Will keep you posted on that one.

Well, I still don't know when my parents first lodged in Kinross Road!

I have today received my late brother's B.C. which gives his place of birth as 51 Balliol Road, Bootle - I remember going to the swimming baths in that road, do they still exist?

However, I do now have an address for my parents in 1934 - 9 Brook Road, Bootle.

I think I'll call it a day now on this one, as I was only trying to find a bit of non-vital additional info. for my tree.

Thank you to everyone who offered help and suggestions.

Hi Angela, While I cant help directly with your specific search I find a similarity with one of my own and have learned that an awful lot of men joined the 'merc' to primarily serve with the RFA and do their patriotic bit for the duration of the first war.
If indeed thats where you discover he served you may find this site worth remembering ? http://www.historicalrfa.org/
