Lookin for Great Grandfather's Burial

Whats the best way to find a burial plot for my Great Grandfather. Not sure exactly when he died but believe it to be in 1895. Fairly sure of his address at time of death. Thought of ordering his death cert but I don't believe it'll give me burial info. Any help would be greatly appreicated. Do cemeteries provide this sort of info ? Is it available on line? Thanks for any help.

If you have an address for him when he died it may be possible to work out the likely cemetery he is buried in. However depending on where he was living there are not many on line and it involves a search of the cemetery records. Some are in Record Offices and some with the cemetery officials.
What was his name and where did he live and what was his religion?

The death certificate won't give you the burial details only the date of death, place of death, name of deceased, gender, age, address, occupation, cause of death, informant's name and address, date of registration and registrar's name.
Some burial records are online Toxteth Park Cemetery records are here:-
http://www.toxtethparkcemetery.co.uk/
If it was an RC burial the records are on the Ancestry website we can do a look-up for you. We can also do look-ups for Walton Park Cemetery. Other cemeteries such as Anfield, Everton, Kirkdale and West Derby are not covered online for that date.

Name: John Cowley
Birth: 15Nov1846
Address: Most likely address was 6 Arnot Street, Walton, Liverpool
Religion: CofE
Date of Death: I think it is 1895. Was alive in 1891 Census but wasn't listed as next of kin for his son's enlistment for Boer War (1898).
Thanks to all for any help.

Searching for John Cowley deaths between 1891/1900, Liverpool. FreeBMD.
The nearest, age wise.
John Cowley, 1893, Liverpool, Dec Qtr, 8b 57, age 42,
I know your John should be 47 by then, but that depends on who registered the death knowing the exact age, it may have been a guess.

Thanks Bert. From Lancashire BMD there is a John Cowley Age 49 dying in 1895 Sub District St Peters Registers at Preston. Not sure if thats him so I haven't ordered the Death Cert. His most recent son was born and registered in the District of Christ Church Everton so I don't know if St Peter's is close to it. Also are Liverpool deaths registered in Preston or only certain districts.
Thanks to all.

Hi David,
John's death would only be registered in Preston if he died there, if he died in Liverpool, his registration would likely be the nearest registration office to his home or where he died.
The link may help,

Hi David,
All Births, Marriages and Deaths in Liverpool would have been registered in one of three Registration Districts at that time, Liverpool, West Derby or Toxteth, depending on where the deceased died. The latter District was in operation from 1881 to 1922 when it was abolished 1.9.1922 to become part of Liverpool registration district. The others ran from 1837 up to 1934 when their names and coverage were changed.

Thanks dickiesam,
I think I've narrowed it down to West Derby as both Kirkdale and Walton on the Hill are included. At Lancashire's BMD West Derby isn't a choice for region. Do I select Liverpool for West Derby? or some other region. Thanks

That site only lists 'general inclusive' regions in their search menu as opposed to actual registration districts. If you want to search on a specific district, should you know it, try FreeBMD which gives you the choice of County or District. If you know there is more than one registration district in a city or area you can search on more than one by holding down the Control key while selecting the second/third etc district.

David,
can you give us the reference number of the last census you found him on, or family members.
Who is the next of kin on the sons Army papers?

The only way you can get specific details about the death, actual date etc, is by buying the cert using the references from the Index, qtr, volume, page etc. Purchase certs from the General Registry Office online
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certi ... efault.asp
Cost £9.25 incl post. Do not buy certs via online genealogy sites which will cost you at least twice as much and sometimes a lot more.

Bert,
The last census John Cowley was on was 1891. The family was incorrectly listed as Cowey. I'm not sure about a reference number but Reg District: West Derby, Sub Reg District: Walton, ED, Institution or Vessel: 41, Piece:2977, Folio: 103, Page #1.
I didn't keep a copy of the army documents and no longer has access buy Mary Jane Cowley was present buy John was not. This is for John jr. signing up for service in the Boer War.
Thanks
David

Thanks David,
I can see where the Arnot St address comes from, Alfred's Baptism Sept, 1892.
In 1901, Mary J his wife declares herself a widow, looking at the birth patten of the children, it suggests they may have lost some. Possible John died around the time of Alfred's birth.
Have you found any of the older children's marriages, they may declare John as deceased, Date Clue?

Bert,
Thanks. I have Peter's marriage cert and it show's John (his father) deceased. But the marriage was in 1904 and I think he died between 1891 and 1898.
Dickiesam,
I was on Ancestry last week and saw his army documents one of which had his mother's name on it. Unfortunately I didn't keep a copy all I have is a printout of his military service (Royal Irish Fusiliers, 1898). So I'm pretty sure his father died prior to his service.
