Hello,my g.grandfather is shown on the 1901 census as 'beerseller', and another ancestor in the same village ran a local inn, both premises are long demolished. Is it likely I can find more information?

Good morning Tina, thanks for your help. One was John Pilkington,he was shown at The Beehive in Cronton in (Ithink) 1901,the other was Elijah Briscoe,in the 1901 census,he was 'beerseller' at the Hen and Chicken,Chapel Bridge Road, Cronton.(Tarbock). I have reason to believe that Briscoe was in the trade previously, possibly c 1880 in the same area.

Breweries often have records of tenants going way back, even if the pub is long gone - that's if the brewery has survived, too.

Good morning Fledge, the difficulty could possibly be discovering the name of the brewery involved, as I haven't as yet found any pictures of the pubs concerned.

As you are inquiring about Pubs in Cronton/Tarbock you need access to a Lancashire Directory also it may be worth getting in touch with Lancashire Record Office and asking about Victuallers Licenses also I do know that there were reports in the Local paper when renewal of the Licenses took place. I don't know offhand if they appeared before Prescot Magistrates or Widnes.

Thank you Fledge, and also Hilary for the link, I have found a member of Cronton parish council and perhaps I can glean a little more info from that source.

You're welcome R.T
I'd love a Moses Briscoe in my tree, a great name to research.
In 1891 Moses is widowed 45 publican living in Chapel Rd Tarbock, previous street was Cronton Rd.
He has a 1 month old grandson name of Moses, isn't that lovely!
There's also his niece Mary Dingsdale 27 single born in Tarbock, perhaps a relative of his wife?
(Prior to this census Moses was a coal miner)
Added later
Moses married Margaret Dingsdale St Michael Huyton in 1867
she died aged 40 in 1886 sadly.

Sorry to go on a bit here R.T you probably don't need all this stuff but I found baby Moses as Briscol in 1911, looks like his mother was Annie, born before she married.
Will send an error to Anx for wee Moses surname.
Annie is a Yarwood in St Helens with more kiddies.
Will for Moses Quarry Inn Whiston genl labr 1.9.1918 to
Samuel Briscoe work's foreman 220 pounds 10s 5d
I believe Moses remarried to another Margaret.

Hi Tina, and thank you for your help.My grandfather and his brother were illegitimate, and as I was unable until recently to discover his father, I researched his mother's line further than I might have otherwise. I'm glad I did,as I discovered links that I would otherwise have missed.
There are several families in the area which are interweaved with others, and my mum had Briscoes, Dingsdales, and more in her line.I have collected a fair bit of info re all of these connections, but as there seems to be no local history set-up for me to contact (yet) I collect any info available.( to perhaps do a private mini history of the families concerned if I ever find the time!) Thanks again Tina.

Well Redtom it just so happens that I live in Whiston and I have spent many a time hanging out in Whiston Churchyard. Briscoe/Dingsdale are common Whiston names. I have researched the Whiston War Memorial and I have some knowledge on the Local History. We held a Whiston Community Heritage day in 2010 and we had plans of the mines, old photo's and all kinds of Heritage stuff.
