Hi folks
I am unable to read a census return and hoping you can help.
The census is 1871 England, 14, schedule 139, piece 3768, folio 140, page 21.
Shows up as John Phannon, the family I have a problem with is
John Shannon age 48 a shoemaker. Born Rosscommon Ireland.
Margaret ( this bit I can not read looks like 21 ?) wife age 43. Born Dublin.
John Sherlock ? states son but he is the same age group as above age 40 ?,
and I can not read his condition married /single.
Many thanks Adam

Hi Adam..
if you look on the same page a couple of houses above there is also another what looks like 21, but is actually the 'W' the name Welsh, Luke Welsh....
there is also i little 'do' next to where you can see what looks like '21' which is ditto for her husband's surname...
John Sherlock looks to be 'unmar' for unmarried..

Thanks Simone, I was thinking it may have been a letter H, do you think the letter W is for her middle name.

Hi Adam
I think that the transcription of Son should read Servant.
Not very clear but this would make more sense.
Hopes this helps.

Hi Adam, I agree with Juno, wife Eliz is 43 and John 40 is a servant shoemaker, no relation.
Can't see wife as Margaret sorry.
Need to find them in 1861

Many thanks for the help, I was hoping to gain more information on John Shannon, he is not in the 1861 census he was a widower and married Elizabeth Galbraith, also a widow 21/08/1870, I think he may have arrived from Ireland between 1861 and 1870.
Thanks again Adam

Can you tell us where did they marry? Who was John's father and father's occupation, and who were the witnesses?

Hi Dickiesam
John and Elizabeth Shannon's marriage I found on Ancestry, married St Nicholas parish church Liverpool 21/08/1870. John's father is Thomas Shannon and Elizabeth's father is Joseph M c Dermot, witness's Michael Duffy and Caroline Jelly.
The address for the bride and groom is Banastre street, I have searched every name in the 1861,1871,1881, census in Banastre street and a couple of local streets for any of the names, the only one I found was Michael Duffy in the 1861, and 1871 census He lived a few doors from John Shannon.
The Shannons lived in Banastre street for the 1871,1881.1891, census and in the 1881 they had the Gardener family living with them John is listed as a stepfather ? I have searched that one but no luck.
My cousin who visits Ireland a lot, visited the "County Rosscommon Heritage and Genelaogy Company Ltd" They carried out a search for him but no luck with John Shannon
Many thanks for the reply Dickiesam, all my family tree leads back to Ireland,
I think this is the first brick wall of many. Adam

I have the marriage details but not the Manchester information which I will keep on file, but it looks like Ireland to Liverpool and possible a wrexham connection, as stated in the 1991 census John Shannon is a stepfather to George or Mary ( I think Mary) Gardener, as their eldest child was born in Wrexham.
Thanks again Adam
