vauxhall road pub

My mother and her family lived in the 1920s to early 1930s in house on Vauxhall Road which I believe was rented from Walkers(publicans). I think the number was 168 but it was next to a pub called "the fail me never" on the corner of Vauxhall Road and Arley Street.

I have tried to find a photo of the pub-even going through Walkers archives at the records office but no luck. The only thing I have managed to get is a pen and ink drawing from a book of Liverpool pubs. Can anyone help me out here?

In the 1909 City of Liverpool Licensing Book, 170 Vauxhall Road was the Fail-me-never, and it had entrances on the main road and Varley Street. It was owned by Peter Walker & Sons Ltd., the manager was Thomas Ivy Owens. The pub's name went back to at least 1864, when it is shown on an OS map.
No 172 had no name and also has entrances on the main road and Arley Street, probably meaning that they were on opposite corners. It was then owned by Harding & Parrington, later by Walker Cain. The manager was Johanna Brereton.
168 is not shown as a pub, although there were 17 in Vauxhall Road.
I have no other details.

Thanks for the info. I may have the house number mixed up but it was definitely next door to the fail me never. So if, as I think, they lived at 168 its probably right. They had nothing to do with the pub just rented the house from Walkers.

1938 Directory has Bernard Costello hairdresser at 168 next door to the pub. James Quirke was the publican.
1911 doesn't list name of pub Thomas Owens Lic Vic cnr of Arley St
168 is Mrs Mary White chandler.

Thanks Tina. I think by 1938 the family had moved to Bootle- Miranda Road, from where they were subsequently blitzed in 1940 and left homeless.

I recall my aunt saying my grandparents sublet part of 168 Vauxhall to a barber so that would seem to be borne out. Thanks again.

I'm still not having much luck with a photo.
