De La Sierna

Hi everyone, new to the forum, so not sure if there's a proper place for surname queries. I am wondering if anyone knows of the De La Sierna surname. It's quite unusual in Liverpool I think. I have found a lot of them in censuses, however it's pre 1901 information that's proving difficult as the men were seamen, and weren't around very much. Any help appreciated. Thank you.

Tracy.
Don't know if You already have the Marriage of Alberto DE LA SIERNA March Qtr 1892 (ref: Liverpool 8b 217) to Margaret Ann McDonald.
Margaret Ann was born C1878 in Lancashire (according to Ancestry.co.uk on 1901 Census).
4 found on FreeBDM:
1. March 1876 (ref: Liverpool 8b 169) {most Likely}
2. March 1878 (ref:Oldham 8d 620)
3. March 1879 (ref: Prescott 8b 678)
4. Sept 1879 (ref: Salford 8d 181)

Hi Pegasus,
Thanks for your reply. I do have the Alberto & Margaret marriage, however you have intrigued me with the other entries on FreeBMD. I'm only getting Liverpool entries. How have you got the others? Cheers.

I just adjusted the search parameter to: All 'Margaret Ann McDonald' Births C1876-1879, Lancashire.
I would be able to do a lot more, if all My Research Discs were not packed away (Somewhere?), can't find anything since I moved last month.

Pegasus, thank you for checking for me, much appreciated.
Jan, thank you for looking this up for me. I do appreciate the help. I do have this certificate. My main problem is finding Alberto's place of birth and also any records of his and his father's shipping activities. I've come to the conclusion that Alberto was born out of the country as I cannot find him before that marriage entry. Am guessing that the only thing I can do is go to Kew for seamen records, but have no idea where to start when I get there. Is there anywhere else I can look before then?
Thanks all

Hi Tracy
The CLIP (Crew List Indexing Project) website is a good place to start the search for your seafarers:
http://www.crewlist.org.uk/
It'll guide you to a number of databases online, for example at findmypast and the Maritime History Archive in Canada.
Good luck
Ann

Tracy.
A long shot (I Know), but one of the top hits in a google search for 'De La Sierna' came up with :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Villanueva_de_la_Serena
This may be the region that Alberto & Family came from originally?

Wow thanks Pegasus, I love your thinking. It's been said in the family that they came from the Philippines, but I haven't found anything to confirm this yet

I did wonder at some point if it was a Spanish connection instead but then I think the Spanish occupied the Philippines for a while didn't they? History isn't my strong point at all. Great idea though, and one I will defo take a look at. Cheers.

Yes, If you do the same as I did on Google search you will see there are various links for the Philippines, one is for a Band/Group of a similar name from there.
