Hi and welcome to the forum.

Can I ask whether you have any information of older children, I would suspect there were a few between the years 1822 and 1835, who were these and did they settle in Liverpool, perhaps you have details of them in the 1841 and 1851 censuses? Which child is your direct ancestor and what information do you have for them?

For the benefit of others reading, the only baptism I found on ancestry was Mary Sophia on 20 September 1840, parents Robert and Jane. Address Baxter Court and Robert's occupation Labourer Salthouse Dock.

Hi
Robert and Jane had the following children; john Robert 1823,I.O.M, Edward 1822 I.O.M and Sarah in 1825 I.O.M + Liverpool births - Catherine Jane in 1830 + the previously listed children. Edward married E. Dillicate, Sarah married John Henry Gill 1847, Catherine married john Henry Gill; we have found some information on them and families. The other children we have nothing other than birth/ch. dates and entry in 1841 census. Some of the children not on census but on I.O.M with ? Relatives. We have nothing on Ann,Margaret, Mary and Phillip and John. Kelly is such a common name! Any assistance with direction would be great. Hope that all makes sense.

Looking for a bit of location here, Liverpool being quite a fair size place we need to know whether they were in the north or south end to narrow things down a bit.

The marriage of Edward Kelley to Elizabeth Dillicate took place on 22 May, 1843 at St Bride with St Saviour. Both were of full age, bachelor and spinster. His occupation was a shipwright of Mersey Street. Father Robert Kelley, Labourer. Her address was Knight Street, father William Dillicate, turnkey. Witnesses were Thomas Whitfield and Mary Manger. Both signed their names, Edward spelling his surname Kelley.

The marriage of Sarah Kelly to John Henry Gill took place in St Nicholas on 12 August, 1847. Again both of full age, bachelor and spinster. His occupation was a Joiner of Mersey Street and father Henry Gill, saddler. Her address also of Mersey Street, father Robert a Shoemaker. Witnesses Henry B Duke and Ann Kelly.
All appear to have signed their names.

Strange that Robert became a shoemaker.

Address's for Kelly family:1830 Leander street, 1835 Doran court, Salthouse dock, 1843 Mersey street; this is the address from which Robert( father) passed away. I have no burial place for any of this family. Sorry for leaving one child out!

Don't know if this helps or not as I can't be totally sure that it would be the correct child, but there is a burial at Liverpool St Mary, for Mary Kelly (no middle name given) on 29 June, 1842 address Downe Street, ?? months, Papist.

I get a feeling this is not the same child as Mary Sophia.

Leanne do you have the family in the 1841 census? ie before some of the marriages.
Leannek wrote: 1843 Mersey street; this is the address from which Robert( father) passed away.
Is this the date of Robert's death?

Hi Leanne,

A possibility,

Margaret E Kelly
1851,
HO107 P2272 F242 Page45

Margaret E is a servant, not much to go on, but her year and place of birth match.

1858, a Margaret Ellen Kelly marries John Town, Wigan, 8c 18,

1871,
John Town,
Margaret Ellen
Children,
RG10, P3895, F20, P33,
Further census are easy to find plus deaths.

You may have to apply for marriage cert to confirm, Fathers name, etc.

I don't know if it is very important but I find it strange that after Robert being a labourer in his life, his daughter, four years after his death, claims that he was a shoemaker on her marriage certificate.

Hello Leannek,

I am directly related to Robert Kelly and Jane Lace. My tree is on Genes Reunited, with over 1500 folk on it.

I seriously doubt that Robert Henry Kelly born 1838 Liverpool is actually a child of the above. I am aware of another Robert kelly born about the same time of the IOM, and also in Liverpool about the same time as the above. I would be interested to see if you have a birth certificate for Robert Henry Kelly born 1838 Liverpool, as I cannot find one.

Some of the trees on Mundia (related to Ancestry) show your Robert Henry as born in Douglas IOM. Though I do know from experience that some of these trees are wrong.

I do not blame you for assuming that Robert Kelly and Robert Henry Kelly, both born in the IOM about the same time, are one and the same person. A clue is that the Robert Kelly who married Jane Lace, was a Labourer, Porter then Warehouseman; whereas your Robert Kelly was a Shoemaker. Another clue is that I suspect your branch of Kelly's used double names whereas my branch does not appear to have done. Also on the 1841 Census: Canning Place, South Side Court, Liverpool HO107 piece 565 folio 7/16 pages 24-5, which shows my branch of the Kelly line; why would two of his own children be missed off and yet two distantly related children be shown?

You have to tread very carefully with such a common surname as Kelly. Not every Robert Kelly is on the Census or FamilySearch, as there are probably more records missing as they have actually got.

Best wishes,Paul.

Robert Henry Kelly bn Liverpool 1838? Where does that information come from?

I can find only 2 Robert Kelly births registered in the Liverpool area between Sep Qtr 1837, when the GRO records began, and 1841. There isn't Robert Henry Kelly birth although it is possible his birth was not registered.

Births Jun 1840:
Kelly, Robert - Liverpool 20 462
Kelly, Robert - Liverpool 20 471
