Hello and thanks for previous help with Fazakerley family. I have a birth cert for my great grandfather James Hart born 1849 in Lowton. Registered by Leigh Union presumably the workhouse. Mother is not married. Happily the census of 1851 has James with his mother, brother and grandfather living in Lowton. I have found a bit about the workhouse on Wikipedia and on the workhouse website. Are there any records about the workhouse held locally? Thanks

Hi there, The birth would be registered by Leigh Union as the registration district would be organised by the Guardians of the Poor for theLeigh area.

Any documents or records for Leigh or Lowton would be at the Wigan & Leigh Archives which is at Leigh Town Hall. Check with them - there are some digistised on the web but I'm not sure that they cover the years you are interested in. http://www.wlct.gov.uk

Can I just repeat - please check before you travel that you go to the right place. Not all Leigh documents are available at Wigan and vice versa. You will also probably need to make an appointment at the Archives or book at viewer at the Local History Section of Leigh Library.
