Who was Edward Rowlands

Hi to all, don't know if any one can cast an idea over this gent who was born in Manchester in 1831 according to his age on the 1881 census. He was a widower with two sons when he married Ann Hargreaves also born in Manchester at St Nicholas church. Liverpool in January 1868. Ann was also a widow with a family and they both lived at Queen Street, he claimed his father was John Rowlands, a tailor and she was the daughter of Samuel Holmes a miller. Later in the same year 1868 their daughter Mary Ellen was born.
With all this info you would think it would be possible to trace his earlier life but not having any luck. In the 1871 census Edward is missing but Ann and her children plus both her stepsons John age 14 and Henry age 12 are living with her eldest daughter and husband Henry Lucas and their family at Rockmount Street,(I believe Rockmount st was in the vicinity of a couple of quarries so he was possibly working) but what is interesting is that both the stepsons are shown as being born in the West Indies, I thought at first this was a mistake but with the rest of the family the enumerator has distinguished between West Derby and West Indies. Between the couple they both had sons named Henry with a few years between them in age.
In the 1881 census it is obvious from the wording that Edward has given the information except for his daughter Mary Ellen where he has stated she is a step daughter and all children including his son Henry are born in Manchester, no mention of Liverpool or the West Indies, his job is now a Cattle drover. After this census I have come to a halt with the family. I have looked at records for the Carribean for Edward Rowlands thinking he may have served in the military but no luck, cant find a first marriage for him either nor records for his sons John or Henry. What happened to bring him back to England was it end of military service or did his wife die in the West Indies or here, whom ever she was?
At least it looks as though his boys were well looked after by Ann, any light you can throw on the subject would be well received cheers L.B :D

Hi Simone thank you very much for your interest and the possible link through John Rowland the tailor. I dare say at some point all will be clear with Edward, I am just really so curious of the West Indies connection, and it is exasperating not being able to find a common link. I also have Rowlands in my own family, but this gent was married to my husbands Gt. Gt grandmother and she seemed like a very special lady so I think he was a lucky man to find her
Thanks once again L.B :)

Looking again at the 1871,

RG10; Piece: 3850; Folio: 90; Page: 40;

Could the enumerator recorded West Swansea?

Also if Edward did marry Sarah Clarke, 1853, a death for Sarah Rowlands needs to be found between 1853 & 1856, marriage to Mary John. A couple of possibilities in Wales, but?

The 1833 marriage I posted earlier as possible for John Rowland to Elizabeth Breese, sadly database doesn't give any more info,just he signs, she marks 'x'.. witnesses William Taylor and William Cawley.
