Matilda M Church married Norman W Nelson in 1911 , she listed her father Henry as "inspector" on her marriage certificate.
Henry retired from Liverpool Police in 1908 after 25 years.
I have a photograph of him wearing a uniform and a peak cap with a badge containing a flag with a white star on it.
I would post the photo but am having trouble trying to upload it to my computer.
The uniform looks like it could be a dress uniform as Henry is wearing a bow tie and has medals on each side of his chest. He has five inverted stripes on the bottom of his right sleeve and the coat is double breasted.
Has anybody any idea what his job may have been after leaving the police?
He cannot be found on the 1911 census though he didn't die until 1939.

The 1911 Gores Directory has Henry at 405 Mill St which is the same address his wife Elizabeth is at, 1911 census RG14 P22233, still a Police Constable. Wondering if any directories following would have his new occupation, more descriptive than Inspector.

Where would I find the relative directories for Liverpool?
All directories I have found on Ancestry are professional and not for ordinary public.

The 1911 directory was the only hit I could get for Henry, I would think the record office or Library will hold other directories for Liverpool.

Re: Photograph.

In appearance the uniform looks more Maritime, though what branch it's difficult to make a suggestion. If it is a Police dress uniform, I'm sure anyone with that sort of knowledge would have no difficulty in identifying it. The medals, left of chest, I imagine would be his for service in the Police force, the chevrons on the right sleeve could well be related to time served in the Police force, again, anyone with knowledge of the Police force and their uniforms would help with that.

The medals right of chest are more likely to be a relatives, father or son.

Mother, Elizabeth, 160 Upper Warick St, Liverpool.

If he is the son and they are his medals, it helps date the photograph sometime after 1920.

Not sure about William Henry I thought I found him married but cannot be sure. Warwick St. doesn't seem to be on any records I have, is there no mention of his father Henry? Where did you find this? Have got his younger brother Albert Edward Victor mentioned in dispatches and have found a William Henry KIA but not sure if this is him.

Thought of trying to find out about the White Star Line offices in case it is a night watchman uniform.

I thought it was a bit odd there was no mention of his father on the CWGC site, the medal card had the address and mothers name only.

There are 2 Liverpool births that fit, W H Church death.

William Henry Church, Toxteth Park, 1895 8b 193.

William Church, Liverpool, 1896, 8b 72.

Both have a mother, Elizabeth. The latter on the 1911 has a father recorded as Widower, therefore his mother Elizabeth would not be mentioned on the medal card. I think the William H Church, 30300, is Henry's son.

Is it possible with Henry missing from the 1911 and no mention of him on the above and the medal card, he was split from the family around that period of time.

Will have to look further into this. Will see what I have got on WH Church's marriage I may have been barking up the wrong tree.
Will get back on this probably not today having third go at root canal on same problematic tooth, not pleasant!

Back to the photo, I could well imagine the likes of White Star employing Quayside security and passenger welcomers for when the big liners were in town, would imagine ex policemen would fit the bill nicely. A delve in to the White Star employers records sounds good if the Police site comes up with nothing.

A.E.V. Church was Elizabeth and Henry's youngest son, didn't think there would be two of them. I found that on the Forces war records site. Still having trouble accessing the war records on Ancestry. Any info. on how to get there or are you on a different site?
Thanks for the vote of confidence toyed with the idea of having it out but there is so little tooth at one side thought might have to have gum cut!!! It probably wouldn't have been as bad if one nerve hadn't been inflamed. Still it's nearly finished so hope all goes well as no nerves left in it, just needs shaping of the canal now.

Henry Church, Petty Officer, 6'-2" 210lbs.

Birthdate, 14/12/1859.

Looks like the uniform (photo) is, Petty Officer, White Star Line.
