death certificate look up

My Grandmother - Mary Ann Lunt died in 1978, I am trying to order her death certificate so I can add the date to my Family Tree poster, but because I don't know the exact date it won't let me order a certificate. I have asked all of my family but nobody can remember the date she died (sad I know, I was only 12 at the time and both of my parents had died so there is nobody else to ask).
How can I find out if I don't know the date, that is the only reason I am ordering it just so I can put it onto my family tree.
Your help will be appriciated very much
Thanks Andrea

The death was registered in Dec Qtr 1978
Mary Ann Lunt
Birthdate 6th October 1894
Age 84
Registration District Malton
County Yorkshire North Riding
Volume 35
Page 0571
Is this the correct Mary Ann Lunt.

Thank you for you quick reply Katie
That is my Grandmothers date of birth but she died in Widnes, which would have come under Cheshire or Lancanshire, it the district that doesn't seem right as we don't live near to there??
I'm almost certain it was 1978 though and the death you found fits exactly. Are there any other deaths about that time as well?

Ancestry again have made an error. On checking the original entry it is Halton. Honestly not good enough.
This is the entry:
http://search.ancestry.co.uk//cgi-bin/s ... &ml_rpos=1
Link to the incorrectly transcribed registration district.
http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/7579/ ... turnRecord
Link to actual record which states Halton.
So the correct details are
Dec Qtr 1978
Mary Ann Lunt
Halton
Volume 35

Thank you very much Katie I do appreciate the good work you have done for me (I was confused on your reply at first but that was the fault of Ancestry). Could I please ask you what is the GRO no, I think it says I can order a certificate if I have this and I don't have the exact date,
Many thanks again
Andrea

Ignore my last request as I put the date as 01/01/1978 and they will do a search either year.
Thank you for your help

Hi Andrea
The information you need to give them when you apply for the certificate is:-
December Qtr 1978
Name: Mary Ann Lunt
District of Registration: Halton
Volume 35

Well done Katie, what a mess they make of it.
Andrea the GRO number is the Vol and Page, so just what Katie gave above will give them the correct information.

What I can't understand Mary is they are putting extra information in for example:- County: Yorkshire West Riding? No were on that entry does it state County Yorkshire West Riding and that is misleading.

From the GRO entries I've looked at on Ancestry recently they are now putting the title as "Inferred County"

There is a lot of that at the moment, they are acquiring their information from an outside source and it isn't correct - check a recent death, or at least one only a few years old, the accuracy is abominable - ie Prescot is now in Liverpool?

I was apparently born in South Wales, according to Ancestry, which is a revelation to me - and about eighty miles out.
Well done, Katie.
