William Royden

Post by Billy3 »

I am seeking information on my grandfather William Royden who died in Liverpool U.K in 1949. He was a soldier in the Boar war ,saw action in Gallipoli (Dardenelles) and also in France\Belgium during w.w.1 where he was gassed. He had four Chidren Josephine, Frances, John and Catherine who was my mother. They were living at 65 Richmond Row, Liverpool , U.K during and immediately after w.w.1 ended. I believe his regiment was possibly Kings Rifles? Would be grateful for any information or useful sites to visit which may help. Regards Billy3

There are service records on Ancestry for William Thomas Royden, son of James and Catherine Royden. Served in South Africa with Royal Dublin Fusiliers.

There are also records for a Thomas Royden dated 1908 who joined South Lancashire Regiment, number 281, same man as his parents are recorded as James and Catherine Royden, Comus Street.

His medal card is on Ancestry.

If this is the correct man, I know someone who is researching this Royden family.

Don't forget that rather than paying immediately for a subscription to Ancestry, either take out a two week free trial or use your local library which should have Ancestry available for free.

If you do not subscribe it would be worth investing in a few credits on Findmypast.

There has 6 images of William T Royden's military records, 1893 to 1902. Somewhat damaged condition but definitely the right man enlisting into the Royal Dublin Fusiliers at Warrington and names his parents and a brother John.

This appears to be the family in 1891....
1891: RG12 Piece 2921 Folio 35 Page 28
Address: 2 Court, East View, Liverpool
James Royden Head 40 1851 General Labourer - West Derby, Liverpool
Catherine Royden Wife 42 1849 - Preston, Lancashire
Thomas Royden Son 17 1874 Hawker - West Derby, Liverpool
William Royden Son 15 1876 Hawker - West Derby, Liverpool
James Royden Son 12 1879 Scholar - West Derby, Liverpool
Robert Royden Son 10 1881 Scholar - Liverpool,
Mary Royden Dtr 7 1884 Scholar - Liverpool
Amelia Royden Dtr 4 1887 - Liverpool
Katy Royden Dtr 2 1889 - Liverpool

As Katie posted earlier, William enlisted as Thomas in the South Lance Regt in 1908. Findmypast have a set of 'damaged' images of his service up to and including WW1.

Edit: Meant to ask if that YoD of 1949 for William was a typo? The nearest I could find to get an idea of a YoB was this one...
