The MORRISON Mystery

In 1851 census at Kitchen Street, Liverpool I find a William Morrison age 66 born in Liverpool, listed as a shipwright (Royal Navy). He appears to be with his wife Elizabeth Morrison age 65 born Oswestry, Shropshire. They appear to be living at their son in law James Aldridge's household.

I tried to find them in the 1861 census but could not find them (maybe I over looked something!) so I speculated they had passed away.

I attempted to "guess" from GRO records which death entries might be theirs so I tried foolishly with the random approach to apply online and hoped luck was on my side!

I first attempted for William with the 1853 year of death and a year either side - I received a refund. Then I tried with the 1858 and a year either side, which also resulted in a refund!

My attempts with Elizabeth proved equally disastrous. An attempt with the year 1854 and a year either side, plus later the year 1857 and a year either side resulted in refunds!

That has left only an 1860 possibility for William but no other options for Elizabeth in the specific Liverpool / West Derby districts. If they died outside this area, I think I will struggle to pin point them!

I guess I'm left hoping for burial records that might come to light and reveal
their final resting place, if nothing else!

Thanks for taking the time to read my experience!
:-)

Dont know if this should help any ? No ages recorded but given their ages on the 1851 census it is a reasonable assumption to make as to why they are missing from the 1861 census ?
If one or other were 'hospitalised' they may well have died in the W.Derby Registration district.
If Elizabeth died first I would work on the assumption that William would be close behind.
I get for William
1854 - 8B/251 - Q3 L'pool
1858 - 8B/123 - Q2 L'pool
1859 - 8B/152 - Q2 L'pool

1857 8B/320-Q4 W.Derby
1857 8B/321-Q3 W.Derby
1857 8b/68 -Q4 W.Derby
1860 8B/277 Q1 W.Derby
For Elizabeth
1853 8B/137 Q4 Liverpool
1853 8B/54 Q3 Liverpool
1855 8B/221 Q4 Liverpool
1856 8B/207 Q1 Liverpool
1857 8B/125 Q1 Liverpool
On the positive side, at least you are getting refunds ? There are many who end up with useless certificates.

William Morrison died at 5 Luton Street, Kirkdale of bronchitis (14 days certified) - informant William Woods of same address!

Another mystery to solve, who was Mr Woods? :-/

You are going to have to check out any daughters who may have married him/remarried to him, otherwise possibly he was a lodger/boarder, many of our ancestors let out a room in their house as an extra means of income.

After a frustrating attempt to get a copy of Elizabeth's death certificate - I can say I finally have a copy in my possession.

My first attempts resulted in my fee being refunded each time, as supposedly no death certificate was available.

The second attempt resulted in a random certificate from 1905 being sent supposedly the one I was seeking in 1855 - 1857.

A complaint was logged and finally today, Elizabeth MORRISON's death certificate arrived safe and sound. Sadly I can't read the date in March 1856 (could be the sixth) when she died but she died at 109 Duke Street, Everton - the same address as the informant William Woods!

Very happy to have knocked down a brick wall - I just knew it had to be there!
