Birch Tree Cottage in Scarisbrick was apparently built by the Marquis de Casteja in 1878 for his gamekeeper - looking on the 1881 census of Black Moss Lane I can't seem to find a game keeper or a property with that name!
Is there another way of finding out who the gamekeeper was or who first lived at the property?!?
Many thanks.

Re: Birch Tree Cottage, Scarisbrick
Where did the information come from about the date of build and it's use as a a gamekeeper's house. I can find mention of a present Birch Tree Farm is that somewhere different.
The Scarisbrick Family archives are lodged at Lancashire Record Office so you may find information there.

It's Birch Tree House per this estate agent's description:
"A contemporary farmhouse situated in a beautiful setting in Scarisbrick. Originally built by the Marquis de Casteja in 1878 for his gamekeeper, "

Re: Birch Tree Cottage, Scarisbrick
sorry for the delay I keep forgetting to tick the notify me box in my posts
yes that's the one - being built so close to the 1881 census I thought it would have been easy to find - sadly properties not named on there
Mr Wright's address is given as Dam Wood!
Another ref to a gamekeeper states that one was living in Haskayne in the early 1900s
The cottage is by Black Moss Farm I believe!

Re: Birch Tree Cottage, Scarisbrick
I made an attempt to contact somebody on ancestry who had the Massam family of Black Moss Farm in their tree - had a reply from the tree owner and they have put a descendant of that family in touch with my friend, as he can tell her more about the history of the cottage (already supplied a picture of his grandmother outside the cottage) but he too is unaware of the game keeper connection.
Nice to have a little success here and there!
