Any information on railway personnel working overseas?

James Young; born Giggleswick, Yorkshire about 1828, spent a lot of early years on the railway. He had a child, Alice Elizabeth, born in Santander in Spain around 1859. There are stories of British railway personnel working overseas when the boom ended in the UK. James Young probably went to work for Alfred Stanistreet Jee who reportedly worked in Santander. Does anyone know where I might get further information on the lives of the lower orders involved with such work or travel documentation from the time?
