Brown family from Liverpool

I'm having great difficulty in tracing my great great grandfather Joseph Brown. I know that my great grandfather William Brown was born in Liverpool in 1834. ON 23/9/1863 he married Johannah Brown in Stoke Damarel, Devon. On his marriage certificate he gave his father as Joseph Brown, deceased, a Master Carrier. I don't know where Joseph was born but my late aunt queried whether he was Welsh as there are links between Liverpool and Wales. I have tried to find William and his father on the pre 1861 Censuses but to no avail, the same results ensuing when checking birth, marriages and deaths. William appears to have made a career for himself in the army so would have moved away from Liverpool and was based in London and Rye before ending up in Brixham. Where can I find information? Thank you.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Do you have any census at all for them? please give the details plus the reference so that we have a point to begin from. Who were the witnesses at the wedding? Have you checked the military documents available on Ancestry and have they been useful to you?

There is a tree in Anc which has Wm's birth in Lpool and his death aged 92 in Devon in 1924 and his wife died in 1917 Totnes Devon aged 72.
You probably know all this and about his son Frederick Gordon.
Not much help.
Was his occupation in 1881 Chelsea Pensioner, Sergt Instructor to Volunteer Artillery??
So hard to read.
