I am searching for a Liverpool marriage record for Patrick Clarke born in Ireland abt 1811 and Margaret Basson born in Whitehaven, Cumberland abt 1830.Their first child Mary was born in 1847 in St. Anthony's catholic church, (near Scotland Road). I have found no marriage record for Whitiehaven so I am guessing they may have married in Liverpool.

I couldn't find them on the site below, but you might want to have a play around with the names as I only typed in what you had put on here.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Can you give the details from the birth certificate of one of the children as it often states the mother's name as
"Late previous married name, formerly maiden name". That might help in case the mother was a widow when she remarried.

Well Bert and Hilary both seem to have come up with a logical entry in the 1861 census, based on the names you have given. Can you tell us where you have got Margaret's maiden name from - is it from a birth certificate/baptism/or just assumed from a census and which one?

Michael Clark in the. 1861 census marries Mary Basson on 3 March 1865 at St Peter C of E Liverpool. His father is Patrick Clark and her father is William Clark.
This implies to me that Michael is a son of Patrick by a previous marriage and marries his stepmother's sister, Mary Masson and Margaret Masson being sisters.
In 1871census at Clement Street
Patrick Clark 59 bn Ireland
Margaret wife 42 bn Cumberland
George son 19
Ellen dour 11
John brother 52 bn a Ireland
Patrick nephew 14 bn Ireland
James nephew 12 bn Ireland
Philip brother 50 bn Ireland
John nephew 18 bn Lancashire
All are Clarks

Many thanks everyone for all the searches. It looks like Patrick may have married Margaret Basson between 1842 -1846, as his son Michael by a previous wife was born abt 1841 and Patrick's and Margaret's first child was born in 1847. Still, there is no sign of any of Patrick's marriage records. It's possible him and Margaret never bothered to get married because he had been married before.
