Hi all, talking to a relative last week, I was told that my grandmother , Margaret McKeon worked in this pub in Liverpool city centre, probably around 1910. She said her uncle ran the pub. Are there any records that I could check to find out. I have spent a few hours going through online records, but cant find anything.

I have checked the 1901 and 1911 census, and the nearest I can get is a William McKeon, who lived at 73 Portland Street Liverpool, and 'at home' is in the census for a place of work, so I'm assuming there must have been a pub there off Vauxhall Road as well.

Margaret was born in Liverpool, but her dad was from Queenstown in Cobh, so presumably her uncle would be from there as well.

Any ideas gratefully appreciated .

I have a copy of the 1909 'City of Liverpool Licensing Report Book'. The entry for that pub is:
5, Tarleton Street (Carnarvon Castle); Full 6 days [licence]; Licensee: John Fagan; owner: executors of Annie Fagan, same address, 6 rooms for domestic purposes, one licensee since 1 Jan 1900. Several amendments by hand show later owners, ending with Higsons.

Have you any Fagan links? I do not think there will be any remaining records of who worked at the pub.

added later: 1911 census has John Fagan, 29, publican, born Liverpool on the premises, with his aunt, BRIDGET McKeon, 51, widow, assistant, b. L'pool. Also three female assistants, unrelated.

In 1911 there was a Bridget McKeon, widow, assistant in the business, 51, born Liverpool. John Fagan is the publican also appears in Gore's Directory of same year. Mrs Annie Fagan, victualler, is in Gore's Directory 1900.

Annie Fagan is listed there in the 1900 directory, then in 1911 it was John Fagan (through to around 1918 per the newspaper ads for staff).

Aha, things are becoming a little clearer now . Firstly, I was forgetting about the maiden surnames. My grandmother's married name was Orrett, but her dad, Charles William McKeon, who died in 1886 was married to my great grandmother, Bridget McTague (McKeon). Bridget was born in Liverpool. I have her as being born in 1857, died in 1926, so the reference to being aged 51 in the 1911 census is quite close.

I have no record of any Fagan's in my tree, but saying that, I have nothing at all yet on my great grandmother's McTague relatives apart from being married. Maybe one of her sisters married a Fagan?

Various census has them all associated with the, wines, spirit and pub trade.

Hi Bert, thanks very much for the reply. Very interesting but I'm struggling to make the connection with Bridget McTague, my great grandmother. Bridget McTague became Bridget McKeon in 1873. Her husband was lost overboard at sea in the Bay of Biscay in 1886.

At the moment I have no record of a Thomas McKeon in my tree to see if that was a connection.

Bridget McKeon is showing as assistant in the business in 1911, but maybe she was not my relative. In your example, Thomas McKeon married a Bridget McCarthy in 1897. FreeBMD shows the death of a Thomas Lawrence McKeon aged 30 in Birkenhead in 1902. This would make his wife the widow, possibly the Bridget referred to in the census in 1911?

We know John Fagan definitely had an Auntie Bridget, his mothers sister. Though not conclusive proof, of the 2 Bridget McKeon's the most likely to assist in the running of a pub would be Bridget McKeon, nee Manley, having had the experience of that environment with previous husbands.
