Hi all,

I'm trying to trace details (BMD) of a Henry Latham, the father of Thomas Latham (b.1829) in the Liverpool area.

Thomas married in 1852 and the certificate states Thomas's father as Henry, a deceased labourer.

As his life is mainly pre 1837 I'm struggling to get any information.

There are Latham's on the 1831 poll book but I think my ancestors may have been too poor to be eligible for the vote, so this is another family presumably.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Could you please give the full details from the marriage certificate, including occupations, addresses and witnesses so that we can see the full picture.

Hi, sorry for the delay.

Thomas is listed as a labourer. Living in Cotter St with his soon to be wife, Rachel Killing, also of Cotter St.

Williams Father Henry is listed as a deceased labourer. Rachel's Father Henry is also a labourer.

The witnesses are John Boughley and Anne (cannot read her surname unfortunately).

The Online Parish Clerk agrees with your interpretation of Jordan Street, Bert and also has another couple of children I would suspect are theirs too.

There appears to be 2 possible marriages,

Henry Latham/Elizabeth Lea, 1817 Liverpool. Put to one side for now, Henry was a Weaver and unlikely to become a labourer.

A Mariner is only a Mariner at sea, if he stayed ashore, an occupation as a labourer is likely.

The baptisms below grouped together show when the Mariners baptisms cease and the labourers begin. It would also depend on the first William dying and renaming another William, not an unusual practice.

I've reached the same conclusion regarding William and Margaret being Thomas's siblings.

However I'm still trying to find out more info on their Father.

This is my "brick wall" which I have hit and cannot seem to navigate.

I must admit that I have not thought that all those mentioned would be siblings but what you have reasoned makes sense. Can you locate the death of the William in question?


I've also been searching the 1841 census with no joy except the children (Thomas, William and Margaret) possibly being in the Wigan Workhouse???

Birth abt 1820

Looking at the streets at the time of the baptisms, they are all within spitting distance of each other and close to the docks.

There's an Elizabeth Latham being born to a Henry and Ellen Latham in 1825, and the address is given as Wright St.

I suppose that Henry and Ellen could have moved and Henry and Elizabeth went to Wright St by the time of Williams death.

Or does this seem too much of a coincidence?

To much of a coincidence I think, I wasn't keen on that death, I think Wright St is away from the area of the baptism streets. It would mean they moved away from an area and moved back again.

At least that's something to discount in my search

The children in the Wigan Workhouse are at least numerated together suggesting they are siblings and not in alphabetical order. To end up in there I would think at least one parent possibly died in Wigan.

The one I thought possible died in the Workhouse aged 0, Elizabeth Latham. 1837

Thanks Bert, that discounts that particular Elizabeth being their mother.

I suppose the elder siblings could have lived in Wigan, hence the connection. If it is them, Henry must also have died by 1841 at the latest.

Focusing solely on a birth for one person, especially when you don't know for sure where he was born, doesn't always lead anywhere, which is why we tend to look all round the family, including siblings etc. Even if they don't prove positive results, at least the negatives can often help to eliminate others.

Looking at siblings also sometimes leads to other clues, such as whether there is another family member living in the household.

www.workhouses.org.uk lists the records available and where they are held for Wigan Workhouse. It would appear that very little has survived.
