33 Ullet Road - Original Occupier

Hello all,

I know this is not strictly family history, but I came to this board via a websearch and have seen you guys are great at checking maps and directories. This kind of work is all very new to me so I wonder if you might be able to give me a few pointers toward how I might be able to find out the original occupier of this address at the top of Sefton Park? I am making an art work about the area and it would be really useful to know this detail.

So far from looking at maps I can see the house appeared in the landscape between 1850 and 1900, and that Ullet Road was for a time known as Ullet Lane, would anyone be able to guide me any further? I have been adviced to check directory microfilms in the library but of course not possible at this time.

very grateful for any help you can give,

KP

Hello and welcome to the forum. I’m sure that some of the members here will soon be flicking through directories etc.
Was the house ever named? It is sometimes easier to follow a name than a number.
Whereabouts in Ullet Road?

Gore's 1853 references Ullet Lane, Park Road. Am trying to find any details.

1851 census has four properties on Ullet Lane, Chapel Villa, Elm House, 2, Chapel Villa and just Ullet Lane.

Hi D, thanks so much for the responses

the postcode is L17 3AS. So its right on the corner of Ullet Road and Sydenham Avenue...And the house name at the moment is Sydenham Mews

and so am I right in thinking from what you have (so kindly!) dug up so far that:

1911 - James Carlton Stitt lived at 33 Ullet Road

AND in

1860 - Henry James Hawley lived here...?

If those are correct, my question is how sure we can be that in 1860 33 Ullet Road was the same 33 Ullet Road that it is now?

Thanks so much for your help!

1911 directory, note 1881 directory by RT previously, not 1860.

33 is still showing on the front door and I doubt if there has been any renumbering.

The 1881 census, the property was called, May Bank, property of Mr Hawley.

I'll check the electoral rolls again but I suspect the property was built around 1875.

If anyone can find the 1871 census for the property, it would help.

Do you have access to the Deeds?

Electoral Rolls,

The first hit I get for May Bank, Ullet Rd is 1879/80 and Mr Hawley is in the property.

In the 1871 census the Toxteth side of Ullett Road (or maybe all of it) is at RG10/3805 around folio 33 pages 58-60. No house numbers.

Thank you RT and Bert for your help!

In answer to your question RT, I don't know...would that say when it was built?

Are we now safe to assume that the house was built in the 1870s and Hawley was the first owner? Does this mean he would have payed to build it??

I think you would need to see the deeds for that question to be answered, they may give more information. There were lots of builders and developers even then, similar to now, who would have built dwellings and sold them on to either home owners or indeed "buy to let".

When it comes to addresses and property I try to find first hits, even though Ullet Rd is mentioned well before 1879/80, Electoral rolls.

Those dates are the first mention of Maybank (33) and Irvington (35)?, Electoral Rolls.

1875 Electoral Rolls, Hawley and Tobias are elsewhere, the fact they appear next door to each other 1879/80 may suggest a new build property just prior to 1877.

1877, there's a newspaper snippet reporting the death of Mrs Tobias, Irvington, Ullet Rd.

The first edition, Ordnance Survey 6-inch map was published in November 1850. Ullet Lane is shown, but the only house between Smithdown Lane (now Road) and Lodge Lane (now Sefton Park Road) was Ullet Hall, on the east or 'wrong' side of the road for number 33. I don't know when the next edition was published but someone may help here.

Thanks so much! would be really interesting to know if those guys commissioned the build or if someone else built if and then they bought it, how would I be able to access the deed?
