Description The collection provides information regarding the building trade in Liverpool from the late 19th to the 20th century, from the perspective of employers. It is of use in the study of the construction trade in Liverpool and labour history and relations between employers and employees. The collection comprises of minute books of the council of the Liverpool Branch of the National Federation of Building Trade Employers, and committees representing various trades. The collection includes some financial and administrative records of the organisation. Year books of the organisation contain its rules and officers, the terms and conditions agreed by the employers with employee organisations, and lists of tradesmen and building firms in Liverpool. Minute books of related and affiliated organisations include committees to arbitrate in disputes and manage apprentices.
AdminHistory The organisation of building trades employers in Liverpool has been through several name changes, but remains in essence the same - an employers association to act as a counter to employee organisation. The Liverpool Master Builders' Association was founded in 1866 at the Dunham Ox Hotel, Brownlow Hill. It was affiliated with the National Association of Master Builders of Great Britain, founded in 1878, later the National Federation of Building Trades' Employers. A history of the Association, contained in the year book for 1910-11 states 'The Liverpool Master Builders' Association is the pioneer and most successful Master Builders' Association in the Kingdom', this is attributed to the fact that representation on the Council is balanced between the various trades (331 BUI/4/1, page 11).
In 1921 the name was changed to the Liverpool, Birkenhead and Wirral District Building and Allied Trades Employers' Association. Further name changes occurred in 1947, to the The Liverpool Regional Federation of Building Trades Employers, in 1968, to the National Federation of Building Trades Employers Liverpool Region, in 1984, to the Building Employers Confederation Liverpool Region, and in 1994 to Building Employers Confederation. The organisation no longer exists in its original form, but a national umbrella group, the Construction Confederation, continues to represent building trades employers.
