Hello I am new to this forum and hope that someone can assist me.
I am looking for a birth of a Henry or Harry Roberts in Tyldesley in 1886.
I have found the following reference on Lancashire BMD:
ROBERTS Henry Atherton Wigan & Leigh ATH/54/87

My question is 'would a birth in Tyldesley be registered in Wigan & Leigh with sub-district as Atherton??? I want to make sure I am as close as possible given the rising cost and time it takes to get certificates.

Anyone know what information I can expect to find on a birth certificate from this time...hopefully mother's name????

Also can anyone tell me if his father was a coalminer would he most likely have lived in Tyldesley??

You might find this site http://www.genuki.org.uk is is very good to research areas and it would appear that

Tyldesley would come under the district you have.

We understand just what you mean about the rising cost of certificates and you may find it an advantage to apply, using the details that you have from the LancsBMD site, to the local register office rather than the GRO, I suggest that if you know his father's name you state it when applying and perhaps his mother's first name also? the register office is more likely to help if they know some details whereas the GRO would just send you the cert you have asked for.

After Civil Registration began in 1837 the information you should get on a birth certificate is :

When and where born - with a time also given if the child was a twin
Name - if any
Gender
Name and Surname of Father
Name, Surname and Maiden name of Mother
Occupation of Father
Signature, description and residence of information (this may not be one of the parents)
Date of registration
Registrar's name

As far as where the father would live if he was a coal miner, the area surrounding Wigan and St Helens and even further afield was a known for coal mining.

1891 census the only Hy/Harry I can find for the birth yr and place (Tyldesley)
is in Habergham Eaves Burnley, his father Thomas a coal miner.
Mother Lucy, both born Staffs. Other kiddies born in an assortment of places, Staffs/Durham/Yorks eldest 19.

When you get the birth cert, we can look in census for you.

If by chance you know of his siblings, please let us know.

There's also a Harry in 1901 in Burnley whose Mother is Julia bn Staffs married no hubby, with some kiddies names from 1891.
I won't list anymore as it could be the wrong Henry.

Sorry for the delay in explaining the www.lancashirebmd.org.uk website (I've been on holiday).
I did explain it in the last Journal as I have been the co-ordinator for the Wigan & Leigh registration district for whole of the project.

Wigan & Leigh covers all the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan & Leigh including all the sub-districts listed on the website. If you are using the UKBMD website, the application form automatically gives you the correct Register Office where the entry will be stored. Many of the sub-districts have been amalgamated over the years and resulted in the present day Registration Districts.

Therefore, in answer to your first question of whether or not Tyldesley would be in the Wigan & Leigh district - yes. Tyldesley was originally in the Atherton sub-district which then combined with the Leigh District and later Wigan & Leigh joined up.

As explained by Mary A if you know any more details about the person you are looking for i.e., father or mother's names and her maiden name - put them on the application and if they don't match, the Register Office will return your fee. Don't forget to include a stamped addressed envelope.

A word of warning - there were thousands of coal miners in the Wigan, Leigh, Atherton, Tyldesley and St. Helens area - so its a very, very common job and doesn't really narrow a search except if you are sure that he WASN'T a coal miner - i.e, farmer, weaver etc.

There are very interesting websites about Wigan Coalfield, mining accidents and Atherton & Tyldesley if you try them on a search engine.
