My GGgrandfather, James Clark, died at sea on Nov 13 1894 and was buried in Patras, Greece. The details are given in the Mercury, 8 Dec.1894.
My questions -
1) How can I find out where he was buried?
I googled and found there are three present-day cemeteries in the city of Patras. The local Greek Orthodox Church told me there wouldn't be a problem burying a non-orthodox christian in a Greek cemetery.
2) Why does the newspaper death notice say "Australian papers please copy"? His ship, the Tarifa, was a Cunard ship on the Mediterranean run.
3) Can anyone identify the name of the island from the deaths register? "10 miles off island of F...?, Adriaric sea". I've googled Fann, Faun, looked for any Adriatic island beginning with F, no luck. The ship was probably en route to Patras from Naples.
All help and suggestions gratefully received. Thanks.
Linda

Re: Buried in Greece
I've seen this on a number of death notices. It could be that there was family in Australia so it was done to inform them of his death.Linwood247 wrote: 2) Why does the newspaper death notice say "Australian papers please copy"? His ship, the Tarifa, was a Cunard ship on the Mediterranean run.

Sorry for the lack of response Linda, it would seem that your enquiry has defeated the area of our knowledge, apart from Karen's suggestion above.

Re: Buried in Greece
Karen, I thought there may be family in Australia, but have no info on James before he moved to Liverpool.
Sorry about the photo Mary, haven't managed to figure it out
I'll try to find a Greek genealogy forum and pick their brains!
