Chester, 1851 - College?

Post by daggers »

In the 1851 census, a large number of boys' names are listed within the parish of St Oswald - HO107/2172. There is no address given other than 'College', but the entries follow Northgate Street. The principal of the school appears to be Rev Arthur Rigg, MA, no cure of souls. Other staff are also listed.

Can anyone please help with the name of the school or college, perhaps from a directory or local knowledge?

Thanks very much for those useful pieces. I shall have another look tomorrow but think the census placed the school or its residence much nearer the centre of Chester.

Could it be the Bluecoat School in Northgate Street?

A bit more digging has led me to "The Agricultural, Commercial and Mechanical School connected with the Training College at Chester", which advertised in the Liverpool Mercury between 1847 and 1851. As my man was later apprenticed as an engineer this seems to fit. There may be pupil records at Chester Archives which I shall explore when they open tomorrow.
Thanks for your interest.
