Help with entry in Bible

Looking in an ancient Bible [sadly not one with lists of ancestors, but in the family for generations, I believe] I found an inscription:
'Anne Crompton to her niece Anne Walker'.
On the cover is stamped Anne Walker's name, with 1813. The publication date was 1804.

I had a great-grandmother named Anne Walker, born in 1821, so it clearly was not hers, but I know of no earlier linked AW, and the Crompton name has not featured in anything I have found. the younger Anne Walker's family were based around Bury, Lancs in the 19th century and possibly earlier.

Any suggestions on how to track the Crompton link, if any?

No obvious Crompton/Walker marriages on Ancestry, I'm assuming that the niece would be one of her sibling's children although that's not a certainty, but even so it could be the child of a sister. A couple of marriages in Lancashire that might be worth keeping on file.

Do any of these areas seem meaningful in your family? Then it will be down to checking out the female surnames, which I can't do at the moment as this work computer is on a go slow, but will try again later this evening.

None of those names rings any bell, I'm afraid. My Walker ancestor's links were Scholes, Ormerod, Grundy, Taylor, Burgess etc.

No answers, but assuming that Anne would be a child or teenager when she received the bible, these are baptisms that I've found within a reasonable time. Again any clues with either names or occupations?

St Nicholas
31 December 1794 2 February 1795 Ann (9) dau of Peter Walker, Seddon Street, Pilot deceased and Frances Mackie his wife, Walton on the Hill (Don't know what the figure 9 is, possibly number of children in the family, each entry had a number).

30 August 1802 4 March 1811 Ann dau of John Walker, Hurst Street, Clock Maker and Mary Tyler his Wife

6 June 1805 14 July 1805 Ann dau of James Walker, New Milk Street, Cabinet Maker and Ann Neal, his wife

St Peter
October 1810 21 May 1811 Ann dau of Thomas Walker Labourer Gibraltar Court and Elizabeth Gibson his wife

18 April 17 November 1802 Ann Grundy and Esther daughters of Roger Walker, Kent Street, Shipwright and Ann Carter his wife.

Many thanks as always for your searches. As I do not think my Walkers were in Liverpool [although they might turn up here] I cannot shout Eureka!, but I will put them on one side in case they come in useful when I work back a few years.

Hi Daggers,

From the other names in your Walker tree, I assume your Anne Walker b 1821 was the child of Richard Walker and Ann Scholes?

If so, perhaps the Anne Walker who received the bible was the married Anne Scholes. She married Richard Walker in 1812 so she would have been Anne Walker in 1813 when the bible was given. Also, from Lancashire OPC, their first child was born in 1813 so that may have been the reason for the gift from her aunt.

There is the following Crompton/Scholes marriage in Prestwich in 1777:

Good thinking Alison, you may have cracked it! There are a number of John Crompton baptisms around the Manchester area and some for Ann that could well tie in.

I agree with Mary and think you have hit the nail on the head, and you have correctly picked out my known forebears. Very many thanks. I'll slip a note into the Bible to explain the inscription, in case anyone ever looks at the flyleaf again.
