Can any one help me.
Is there a
1871 Census for Dublin. I am interested in the occupants of a No 7 Georges Place, Dublin around 1871 -1875.

Hi Sophia,
Unfortunately all the Irish Censuses were destroyed abt 1916! The only censuses that now exist are 1901 and 1911 which have been recently 'reconstructed' from other original source material that had survived.

Thank you for your reply, I should have realized that regarding the census. Any idea how I can go forward with my research, as I know John Leary born roughly 1856 in Wexford and his father was Bernard I think his mother was Mary. I am wondering how I can research further to find out more regarding his father's roots. It was always passed down that they came from Wexford.

Hi,
Civil registration of BMDs did not begin in Ireland until the Sept qtr of 1864. So finding 'events' prior to 1864 can be very difficult and sometimes impossible. 'Official' Protestant birth registrations can be found back to abt 1848 but they are not in the GRO Indexes.

There are several sites which have church records online, the main one, in my opinion, being Irish Family History Foundation at http://www.rootsireland.ie/ While searches are free you will have to buy Credits to see the content of a record.

There is also Griffiths Valuation which covers a period from abt 1848 to 1862. It is a valuable source of tenancy and occupancy. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php

And FamilySearch, the CLDS site may have something but be wary of any results because data is not checked for accuracy when added to the database. http://www.familysearch.org/ENG/search/ ... search.asp

Some of the Irish records were destroyed by order apparently it was just a bureaucratic blunder that led to the destruction of the paperwork. Other records were destroyed in a fire in 1922 during a conflict between opposing Irish Nationalist factions supporting or opposing the treaty that set up the Irish Free State.
