What do you think the first line says?
.... Maker Engineer. Is it 'pattern'?

I would say pattern, just spelled incorrectly by the enumerator, nothing new there haha!

In subsequent years his occupation was simply recorded as 'motorman', which sounds like some kind of super hero.

I have come across motormen who are bus drivers, tram-drivers or electric train drivers.
And about platen maker.... before copiers and scanners came into existence using platens [the glass panel you put the item to be copied on], there were many other types and uses for platens in engineering. See
