Does anyone have any information on the RAMC Military Hospital that was at 28 Palm Grove, Birkenhead?

A relative was in there in 1915 for some time before being declared unfit for service.

Hi Fledge,

I hope I can help a little, information on this hospital appears limited, on saying that I haven't bothered the N/A. 28 Palm Grove was the home of Capt H Mowett, it was a 12 room building and would have been big enough for conversion for non surgical and after care.
The images, the 1910 directory is more reliable than the 1916(pink) which appears to have been thrown together, the map is where 28 was, next to the Wesleyan Chapel, corner of Lorne Rd.

Perhaps one of those that were either offered for use or maybe even commandeered.

The Long Long Trail lists the RAMC Hospitals in Cheshire here...
http://www.1914-1918.net/hospitals_uk.htm and 28 Palm Grove isn't there.
I believe this could have been a convalescent home for officers which cared for recovering officers close to their families.

Excellent - thanks, all.

The OS detail and directory excerpts are very useful, Bert. There appears to be another building on the site now. So many of the lovely old houses from this area have been lost.

Mary, quite possibly. Capt. Mowatt's family returned to Canada at the end of 1913, so perhaps it was acquired for military use then.

DS - I think it was a convalescent home, although my man hailed from Stalybridge; I was surprised to find him in Oxton.

The image below from the records of Private J A Pownall, 66171. West Kirby lad.

Stamped, Military Hospital, would it have been under the control of the RAMC ?

It might be worth contacting Wirral Archives and/or Birkenhead Library ( reference/local history bit and see if they can help.

It would appear so, Bert. Again, the chap was in there for three months with bronchitis - my relative had an ongoing problem with stomach ulcers, suggesting they might be there to convalesce.

I had a look at Wirral Archives, EO, and couldn't immediately find anything relating to Palm Grove. They do carry a lot of photographs and so on - I might give them a bell.
