Andrew Dunn, engineer.

Thomas Jolliffe's will of 1877 contains a reference to "My sister" Mary Ann Dunn and her husband Andrew.
His sister may have been Mary Errington as I believe she was a 1/2 sister.

The 1851, 61 and 71 census have a Mary Ann and a William Dunn from Tynemouth (North Shields)in Northumberland then Birkenhead. He was an engineer. 1881 Mary Ann is a widow. She born c 1809 he 1811

The problem is I cannot find a marriage of Mary Ann ? and Andrew Dunn.

Any help gratefully received.

What are the death details for Thomas please, and where was he born and when?

And can you give the references for the 1851 census for Mary Ann.

Puzzled as to why he is a William not Andrew, does the Will state that he is an Engineer? and does it give Mary Ann's address?

From the age of her she may well have been married before the 1841 census, have you found her on that for a guideline? and where is Thomas at this time?

Sorry for all the questions but we like to see the whole picture

One of our Members, Daisycakes, is having a problem posting. Until we sort it out I will post what she has found on her behalf, but please Ann, still post if you can - the credit for finding this is yours.

I've seen the 1844 marriage but not convinced it's correct as the will clearly states Andrew Dunn hence the question.

If you are convinced that the Will is accurate then that means the censuses you have found are wrong?

Unfortunately I haven't found details online for this marriage, so the only way of being sure is by ordering the certificate, but giving the parents details as criteria so that you don't pay if it is wrong.

Living next door to the Thirkell family, Emma Thirkell married Thomas Jolliffe, 14 June 1877, Hull

Did Ann marry John's brother Andrew? is this the Andrew mentioned in the Will?

Andrew died, so it won't be him in the will,

ERRINGTON Andrew 69 Hull 9d 179, 1875

Hi Bert,
that's the family next to the Thirkells.

Now the good news I've looked at the 1844 marriage on freereg and it is the correct one William Dunn (widower) and Ann Errington (widow) father Thomas Jollife (mariner). I have a screen grab from Wallsend BT for the marriage 19 Dec 1844.

I thought maybe Ann Errington was Ann Pennack and Andrew had died between 1839 and 1844.
Looks like confusion about first names when writing the will
The plot thickens !!

Thanks for the help

Glad it was the right marriage....onward and upward....I know from my own christian name that first names are often never used

Thanks to all for your help.

Another can(s) of worms opened as there is no mention anywhere of an Ann/Mary Jollife just Errington and now a widow  .

Still if it was quick and easy there'd be no fun !

Still trying to make sense of it all,

It appears Andrew Errington married Ann Pennack, Kingston upon Hull, 1839, 22 282.

The 1851 census form has mistakes, or John Errington married another of Ann Pennack'(snr) daughters. On the form there's a Jollife and a Wilson, likely to be Thomas Jolliffe, father of the bride, 1844 marriage to William Dunn, Peter Wilson likely to be Witness at the marriage, 1844.

Andrew Errington and Ann Errington appear together on a later census.
