My Grandfather was a British Citizen serving with the British Army in Athens during the 1940's, or so I believe! His wife was Greek, named Rose or Rosa Sideris.

They moved to the UK (I don't know when exactly) but their first child, a daughter named Tanya, was born in 1947 in the UK. Her brother, named Stanley William Kostas Sutton was born in 1949 in the UK.

I wondered if Rose's Greek father was named Kostas Sideris, since I think it may be Greek custom for the mother's father's name to be used in a son's name?

Where do I find the consular marriages section of the GRO. Can anyone post a link?

You have 2 options either look up the GRO indexes at Warrington Library who should have a set on microfiche or film or look at them on www.findmypast.com. This is a paying site and you will have to buy credits.

The sections I would look at are

GRO Consular marriages 1849 - 1965
GRO Index Army Marriages 1881 - 1955

I suggest the second if he was a serving soldier might be the one

If you find him you then apply for a marriage certificate from the GRO Overseas section in the same way as you apply for a marriage certiifctae in England or Wales.

Just out of interest, I looked up why my Grandfather might have been serving in Athens.

He was too young to serve in the Second World War, so it's looking likely he was there to lend support to the Greek auhorities in the Greek Civil War in 1944-1947.

Amazing what you learn! I was only 8 years old when he died so I never asked him about his army career then. If only.......!

Ypur grandfather's living next of kin could apply for his Army Service Records. It costs £30 and takes about 6 Months. They have a strict order of who may apply.

Can't remember the exact address but google army service records. I know the place is in Glasgow. OK found it
